Hi guys,

Before I get any comments, yes I use AMD and no this is not for me. (I've already tried to turn him)

I've got a mate looking to build a new rig and he's toying with the 970/980. Now personally I tell him to go large or go home, so I'd say get the 980 and SLI in the future. But I know a lot of folk here are loving the 970 from what I've read. Do the 980's appear to clock as well as a lot of the MSI 970's I've heard about?

Also, I don't think EVGA's ACX 2.0 FTW > Classy are usually worth the monies, that said, he is interested in good clocking cards, so maybe they are worth the pennies?

In the 980 field, I'm not qualified to recommend a specific card so want some thoughts. I'd say given MSI's apparent success of the 970 so far, that maybe the 980 is worth a shot.

All thoughts appreciated.

Well if he likes to bench, then the 980 is where it is at but if he just wants to game, the sensible money will be the 970 and the MSI is looking good. Clocks are GPU dependent and no overclocks are guaranteed unless he waits it out for the 980 Classified in truth and even then it could still be bad luck (but I doubt it).

The problem you will have though is seeing how it performs and you will be wanting one yourself :D

not sure if serious :p

Not sure why a gamer would pay £150-190 more (on a £250-280 card) for a small improvement in fps
(970 ref £250 vs 980 ref £440)

Haha, well i will undoubtedly could be the one helping clock it, but I don't plan on leaving my 290s :)

Valid point. I had the same argument with my GPUs. I ended up not getting the 290x and going 290. I'd offer him the same advice, though he's generally not bothered about spending more. Though i do prefer this method of thinking — personally can't see the 980 is worth the extra. BUT, I respect that for some, it's their choice of card. And I'll gladly play with any tech :D
