Vram shocker@1080p-Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

It's confirmed time and time and time again that vram is a marketing dream, 90% of the people here lap this **** up.

you just confirmed to yourself its BS, and are holding out for a card with a certain amount of vram ?

I think I'm losing the will to live on this subject lol

As you can see from my sig, my last card was a 680 :D

I'm just doing my research to stop me making a very expensive mistake :p

I hope you don't make an expensive mistake, so just buy a card that you can afford and worry little about how much vram it has. It's extremely insignificant.

There's a 7% difference at 1080p and 12% difference at 4k between a 980 sli and 970 sli (which will probably get even smaller with drivers) I think the smartest move would be to go with 970 Sli saving nearly £400 :)

I remember when I built my sig rig, vram was never an issue back then ;)

Haha yeah gotta agree, always amuses me how often we get told we need more VRAM but games keep running fine for those without.

I accept my 2GB card is not exactly future-proof but then it'll need replaced on grounds of speed eventualyl anyway so meh. 4GB seems like more than ample for the time being. (OK, some quad-sli users on 4k screens may be the exception)

OMG Greg please tell me your using a gamepad to play this, or is it a case of they can crank up the caching to make it use a shed load of ram for the PC version but cannot remove the "press RT and hold X" console nonsense ?

Thanks for the info, can I ask what your setup is? I'm interested to know if SLI makes much difference to this title. Obviously 780ti SLI will only have 3GB, but is it still better than say 1 x 980?

290 in crossfire.

There not overclocked either. I was getting about 30-50 fps on a single card maxed out with ultra textures at 3440x1440. Crossfire didn't work but there was a work around on the steam forums that if you make a profile in CCC for it and change crossfire to AFR friendly it will work.
Now I get 60 fps constant with pretty much no drops.

Yer I am using a 360 pad and that was the first time I had loaded it up :D

I think this game is misleading for VRAM usage and caching is happening. If you see rankftw's results at 1440P with his 980, he is getting good frames and not running out of VRAM..... Max Payne 3 anyone? :p

Sounds like the 970's are for you then :)

Anyone who thinks the game doesn't look good maxed out obviously hasn't played it.

Though the benchmark doesn't represent real game performance very well.

Agreed. The game does look pretty stunning and the youtube vids are not doing it justice. I like a good hack and slash type of game as well.

I have noticed the bench also gives massively different results, so don't take that too serious guys. I was 20 fps difference from one run to the next with the same settings.

Weren't people here saying you'll never need more than 2GB VRAM about 6 months ago?

3 to 4 months ago I was being attacked and ridiculed by 780/780ti owners on here for daring to say I was selling my 780 because I thought that console ports would require more ram in the near future.

Who's laughing now?

Actually not me as the 290x I replaced it with is crud and also running out of ram :)

What does that mean for people buying 4 gb 980/970's?

There screwed on launch!

What ever happened to having at least a brief superiority run?

We're all buggered. I've been buggered for months because my modded Skyrim with 452728922 mods runs out of VRAM. What a waste of money graphics cards are.

It runs fine with ultra textures 1440p for me on a 290 but runs like a tank on my 980 at the same settings.

Damn hearing 5.5GB usage on max settings / textures. RIP my 290 :(

Reading around, people on 1440P and 4GB are running out of VRAM with the HD textures and Ultra settings. Seems the frames are good to a point and then tanking to a stutter fest for a few seconds. :(
