80 past a van

I got done for 72 in a 70 on the motorway by a camera van so it does happen. Stupidly chose to go to court (points on my licence were an issue back then) and got a larger fine in addition to the three points, turnip.

Might still have the paperwork at home but was about 12 years ago, will see.

I've heard lots of people say this but I've never actually seen any evidence that someone's been prosecuted for speed alone at this level.

I'm still yet to see any evidence that this has actually happened.

sorry to sound thick, but your start thread didn't make complete sense
so your doing 80 MPH on the motorway on the middle lane, and somebody over takes you in the middle lane? did he move to the outside or did he under take you? and was it a police van?

I read it as he was in the inside lane (right-most) and someone undertook him in the middle lane.

although technically the inside lane is the right hand lane, I'm pretty certain in this instance he means the left hand lane.

Not just technically. The inside lane IS the right lane in the UK surely?

no its not

on a motorway in the United Kingdom

the far left lane of the 3 or 4 lanes, is the Inside lane

the rar right lane, is the Overtaking only lane

Incorrect.
The left-most is the inside lane. All other lanes are provided for overtaking at speeds higher than the one to the immediate left.
This is why some motorways only have 2 lanes, while other busier ones have 3 or more.

So on the M4 past Reading for example, a line of trucks doing 50mph in Lane 1 (left-most), you and the traffic behind could move into Lane 2 (middle) to overtake at 60, while at the same time I could overtake you in Lane 3 (right-most) at anything up to 70mph.

Would be interested to see a picture of it if he's still got it. My parents friend (retired headteacher, very respectable etc) told me he got a ticket for 32 in a 30, I asked to see it and he mysteriously "lost" it.

Not saying your dad's lying of course, it's just that I've heard so many people say stuff like that but nobody can ever come up with any evidence. I've also gone past plenty of camera vans at slightly over the limit and never had an NIP.

I got 3 points and £60 fine for 33 in a 30. This was many years ago and I'd only been driving for 14 months so I had to drive around like a saint every where for the other 10 :)

It does happen.

correct

sorry, that's what I meant really, I just didn't include the middle lane lol

I meant inside as in the left most lane, that's how I've always known it. Outside lane to be the far right lane.

I don't see how it could be anything else?

Milano - which lanes are in the inside of the motorway? Which are on the outside? :)

(Im fully aware which is which, but one would assume that the inside lanes are the ones either side of the central barrier (i.e - the two "fast" lanes) and the outside lanes are the two "outermost" lanes (the "slow" ones).

Holy **** I've thought it was the other way around for years lol. I thought the inside was the inner side of the motorway (right lanes) and outside was the outer side of the motorway (left lanes). That was my logic anyway.

Learn something new everyday as they say.

You are right bro, don't panic!

Inside Lane is the lane to the left of the carriageway you are on, with overtaking intended to take place to the right, or on the outside lane, of the carriageway. Ignore the fact there is often an opposing carriageway to your right, it's irrelevant in describing the lanes in your own carriageway.

Inside, outside, nearside, offside, high side, low side... all upside your heid!

This is why they are generally referred to (L to R) as Lane 1, Lane 2, Lane 3 and in some cases Lanes 4, 5, 6, 7, etc.

Inside lane is the leftmost lane in this country.

Indeed, definitely seems to be the case. But why is it inside lane and outside lane? What is the inside lane inside of?

I think just going to scrap it and go by numbers now as ttaskmaster said.

Outside as in outside of the main driving lane. You pull out of it to overtake and pull in once you're past.

Or possibly stems from racing, where most basic tracks seem to run anti-clockwise, meaning the left lane is the inside and anything to the right is outside.
