Banished - upcoming city-building strategy

I'm loving this. My first two towns didn't last very long, but I'm on my third one at the moment and its going really well.

I think this game as got huge potential, allow the community to mod it, add some combat and it will be awesome.

This game has banished off my hard drive, shame... lot of rave but when you play... meh.

There's only one developer. He's fixing a few bugs at the moment (you can opt into the test version in Steam), then after that he's focussing on improving and expanding the game mechanics, then he's releasing the modkit, which should make for a much more flexible experience.

I agree that after such a promising start, it's a bit repetitive (once you've found a way to do something you generally just stick with it, and a lot of it is just fast-forwarding and watching), but for this to come from one guy and be so polished out of the box is pretty remarkable for me.

It's remarkable but I mainly value the entertainment I get from a game, I couldn't care less if it's one guy or a dozen behind it. Banished gets boring fast once you understand the mechanics, especially if you have experience in city builders. It has no "late game" and the only thing that spices things up is the odd disaster.
It doesn't feel like a complete game to me.

I bought it full price, but I don't think I'd recommend it at that. 50% off I dunno, 75%/£5 certainly I'd recommend it. I've got 24 hours played out of it so far and not played it in a while.

On Steam flash sale today. Worth buying?

I've got 62 hours on it. If you like hands-on 'city' builders and building a population it's well thought-out, very good game - my impression of what an indie ought to be. It doesn't have any combat or end-game as such, just go as big as you can until you're bored, but that's fine with me. I too haven't played in a while, but then I've not played much in a while either.

For me I'd have been more than happy to splash out £7 for it. Watch a Youtube video on it and decide for yourself. :)

Cheers, I'll take a look.

I loved Populous and can happily play Sim City 4 for hours so it looks like my kinda thing at first glance.

Got bored of this in the end mind you I played it for 98 hours. Need to be able to attack people, multiplayer etc.

Jesus i think this is the hardest game ive ever played. 5 games so far, just managed to get through my first winter. Year 6, everyone dies of measles.

Now that the modkit is out for this I'm keeping an eye on the development. There's some decent-looking little mods out there (adding things like windmills, flour and bakers, crops and more luxurious housing), but I'll let them mature a bit before I start a new campaign.

The main trick is to only add houses when you need to provide additional homes for children to start families of their own. Adding houses when they're not needed will only encourage all children to move out and start families, adding extra children, and you can't sustain the supply of food and firewood that the sudden boom creates.

Start with 5 houses then add another each year for the first few years, adding fishing docks and/or gatherers huts and foresters to keep up with the additional demand. Watching a couple of Youtube videos to get a foothold.

It's a rewarding game when it really starts to kick on.

Thats pretty much what i'd be posting, both about the mods and the difficulty :D

I never really had much difficulty with the 1 game i started, and that was on Hard, but i think the reason for that was because i'd sat and watched a LOT of 'lets play' videos, and so you pick up a lot of gaming mistakes and resolutions, and so that kinda took away a lot of the challenge. I eventually got to over 500ppl, had an excess of everything, and there wasnt really any purpose to continuing because i'd be doing so for the sake, not because i'd be unlocking a new building or offering a new food or item to my ppl.

It might have helped if it wasnt just sandbox, and there was a progressive campaign too, cos i'd have done that then moved to the sandbox, but it didnt seem like there was much point in spending another 50+hrs of 'i'll just build this then quit for the day' over and over. Mods will at least add new stuff to try and introduce and factor in with everything else, so i'll be back for that later on.

Good game, should definatly recieve more recognition if only one person made it (you would not think so based on the quality)
Runs great, easy on the eyes, install is absurdly small

If the developer made the same game but with the addition of combat I'd jump on that as well, they could really give the likes of Anno, Settlers etc a run for their money

One of my best purchases of the year to date

The real shocker is apparently developer never played settlers or stronghold

Anyone still playing this?

Had another play over the weekend using some of the mods available. Some of them are nice and make things a little easier (extra wood, iron etc). Anyone found any mods worth installing?

I started playing and enjoyed it for a short while, however keep going back to Stronghold 3 instead, I miss the combat side of it, however love it's complexity in trading and building compared to SH.

Might have to try the mods and see what they're like to keep my interest.
