Hello,

I have a DELL Studio 1537 laptop which I would like to upgrade the Hard Disk Drive ( HDD ) to a Solid State Hard Drive ( SSD ). Also installing Windows 7 as the operating system.

Spec of Laptop is
CPU Core 2 Duo P8600 @2.4GHz
RAM 4GB
OS Vista 32bit

I am not sure if the laptop motherboard will support SSD or do I need to install a third party software ! ?

Many thanks

It'll support any 2.5" SSD drive. The only thing is, it might be a SATA II bus. So, even if you get a SATA III SSD, it's speed will be limited by the bus. So you won't get a speed benefit in that regard, but it'll definitely be an improvement, on what I'm asssuming is a 5400RPM HDD.

It will support an SSD, as mentioned only at SATA II. This is not a huge issue though as the main benefit will be access times, which will be much improved. Read speeds will also be better though, my Dell 1558 has a SATA II SSD installed and I get a sequential read speed of 240MB/s, which is quick enough for me :)

Well this is a great news that I can upgrade my HDD to SSD.
I take that the SSD will only work if I install Windows 7 as I was wondering if I could just copy my the HHD on to the SSD and run with that set up !

Otherwise it is a long process of reinstalling all other software.

It is possible to run an SSD with vista as most SSD manufacturers offer clean up software that makes up for vista's lack of native TRIM support (Intel and Samsung certainly do). It is also possible to clone your HDD onto an SSD (if size allows), some SSDs even come with a cable to do so, but moving to SSD is often seen as a good excuse for a fresh install anyway :)

TRIM, that is the term I was looking for !

Well I am comsidering at the moment either colning ( with my curreny OS Vista 32bit ) or doing a fresh install with Windows 7.

What is putting of at the moment was the TRIM issue and I really should rebuild my Tower PC first as Vista died some some ago.
I really do not want to be with out a computer of some description so will do my tower up grade first as can down laod all the drivers I need for the laptop once I go over to Windows 7 on the SSD.
As for SSD size, well that depends if I can fit 2 SSD's in side the laptop.
If so I will have a 250GB SSD as C drive and OS system. Then perhaps 500GB SSd for files. If there is not enough room then I will just have to go with the 500GB SSD.

Also my tower PC will have a SSD for the C drive of either 128GB or 250GB as I have a selection of HDD from 500GB to 2TB to use for programmes and data.;)

Maybe a hybrid drive SSHD? if you want best of both worlds but only have 1 hdd mounting point :)

No m8 just 1 drive.the drive moves the most used apps to the ssd area of the drive.google can explain it a lot better than me :)
