Tax disc who is binning them?

99% of cars I see day in day out still have the tax disc in place. It's basically just motor enthusiasts that have removed them.

The odd e46 m3 and rx8 were tax discless but that's about it.

Someone at Work (Lorry depot) made a point t'other day.

We now have to go on total trust that the vehicles we drive ARE taxed.

I presume the driver as well as the company would be fined, same at it ever was !

At present we have a "Vehicle Check Sheet" we have to complete every shift for any vehicle and trailer we pull (Numerous trailers per shift !)

On those sheets some of the check points are

  1. Vehicle tax
  2. Operators Licence
  3. Trailer MOT

You couldn't rely on that anyway before - it was possible to 'lose' the tax disc and get a new disc, then send it back for a tax refund and be driving around with no tax despite having a disc saying you're taxed.
Granted, a lorry firm is more likely to forget to tax a lorry than it is to sell the tax in some convoluted way.

Out of interest, how much VED do lorries pay?

More faff, sure, but you don't have to go on 'total trust' at all.

Also gives you the bonus of the MOT details.

The old disc system just proved you had road fund, you could tax a car a few weeks before the MOT expired.

For all those worried about dumped cars with the loss of the disc this vehicle enquiry gives you the added bonus of knowing if it is indeed road legal.

The disc hasn't been a proof of tax for years, probably even decades. The computer system has been the proof for ages. The disc is just a hang over from a long gone time before computers and t'internet.

Nice clear windscreen!

Spotted a few car minus tax discs today. Mostly cars that looked like they were owned by people that actually knew they didn't have to display. I guess most of the general public still have no idea, or just aren't fussed!

Are you suggesting that only the well too do are aware of this?

(The only 2 cars I've seen with them removed are a brand new M6 and a Bentley :p)

my car never had a disc when I bought it, nor was I issued one when I bought it from a dealer on the 1st October

what I am saying is, a lot of cars out there may have removed the discs from their windscreen, but there's also a lot out there that never got issued with one

It really does make the front look surprisingly more clean! I'm quite excited!

Nice 5 series by the way Mr Perfect ;).

Oh wait you seem to have committed a signature indiscretion?! How could you have done something like that!!!

I didn't, Imageshack deleted a load of images months ago and I couldn't be bothered to fix it, so left it as a red X. Yesterday they appear to have changed the red x to an imageshack advert which the mod team obviously assumed I had put there myself or something :p
