Ah so Eid means 'party party' but there are many types! Got it \o/

Pretty much. Eid is Arabic for Festival. Eid on its own is pretty meaningless, the current festival is Festival of the Sacrifice (English translation) and commemorates The Binding of Isaac (Although Islam has a different interpretation of these events, essentially that both the first born Ishmael and Abraham both willingly submitted to Gods Command), or as we would recognise it in Christianity, the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham.

You guys aren't allowed to drink are ya. How you can have a celebration without booze? I just don't understand :p

Probably a stupid question but for Muslim's wanting to sacrifice an animal in Ireland/Britain, are you allowed to do it within the law or are there special regulations which have to be followed?

Yes you can sacrifice an animal in accordance with Islam strictures, in the UK it must also confirm with animal welfare practices so must be done in a slaughterhouse and normal slaughter rules regarding halal meat must be followed. Essentially the only difference is that sacrificial meat must not be sold and at least one third must be given to the poor to eat.

Pretty much this.

Another thing is, most people in the UK prefer to do the Qurbani (Sacrifice) back home.
As back home there are genuine poor people who need food/shelter etc etc etc..
I've done the same thing this year, and for the last 9/10 years, send money back home, relatives buy few cows, and sacrifice it on Eid.

It's also not just "back home" but we have a large number of charities that will carry out the qurbani (sacrifice) in other countries.

I tend to choose a different one each year in one of the more poorer countries. Whilst you could argue that most people in this country do not go hungry, we also try to ensure we do not lose the essence of this occasion.

Qu'ran Verse 22:37
Sahih International: Their meat will not reach Allah , nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.
