Hello

I'm after a TV for my bedroom which when i get my own house i can use as a main tv so looking for something 40-42".
i went around tesco today to have a look as we have a decent selection at our local store.
The couple i came out with info sheets on were:
Sony KDL42W705BBU 42" which was £499
Samsung UE40H6240 40" which was £450

The samsung has 3d but is slightly smaller, not had a 3d tv so no idea if i'd even use the 3d)

Budget wise i dont have a strict one, less than £700 would be ideal, around the £500 mark would allow me more money to spend on beer lol.

The TV would be used for mainly for playing Fifa on the PS4 with the odd movie via my PC.

Any comments about the 2 choices and any other suggestions? do prefer using tesco or currys as they're both local.

Just a quick heads up:
If your primary use will be gaming then I would definitely look at a sony screen. They are by far the fastest panels this year and to get a Samsung screen that would match the gaming performance of a sony screen, you'd be looking at the 7000 series and above which is almost doubled the price of the sony.
I would be looking at the KDL-50W706 priced around £649 in most shops. Slightly bigger screen so you'll never get the urge to upgrade to a bigger screen or if it's definitely too big drop down to a 42W706.
If you want a 40", try track down last years flagship TV W905. Sony themselves say that Is the fastest panel they've ever made.

It's not the fastest panel Sony have ever made because Sony don't make panels and haven't since 2012! Which means when you buy a Sony set you're playing the panel lottery! The W905 has a Samsung panel.

Though Sony TVs do have less input lag as general rule I'm not sure you'd actually notice in reality.

For a bedroom TV like this I'd get a Samsung UE40H5000 for £300 if you don't want 3D or a £450 H6400 if you do.

Yes you are correct Sony did stop manufacturing their own panels some time back. What I was trying to say is that generally the Sony screens have much less input lag when compared to a similarly priced Samsung TV.
Before I bought the 55W905 I compared it to various different Samsung models around the same price and the W905 was clearly in a league of its own.
The picture was just so much clearer with hardly any dithering or false contouring going on. It wasn't over-processed or over saturated like the Samsung screens were showing. I was in currys and adjusted the picture myself disabling all the post-processing options and low/mid/max settings to off to get a clear view of what the screen is all about.
To match the overall picture quality/motion resolution and black level of the W905, I was looking at the 7/8000 series Samsung screens which were out of my budget.

well ended up going Sony, decided to go 3d for the little extra. got:
Sony KDL42W829BBU 42 Inch 3D Smart WiFi Built In Full HD 1080p LED TV with Freeview HD

The sound isnt great but think that just needs some playing around with until i get a sound system thingy for it.
Picture is good and so far im enjoying playing fifa on it :) Shame i dont have a satellite signal going into the room.

Guess my next question is... Are sound bars; just want to improve the sound a bit. Looking at £150 max, if it'll be rubbish at that price i wont bother for now...

The Sony HT-CT60BT that was given away free during the world cup is actually very decent. You should be able to find them for around £75 on eBay as people who don't need them are always selling them.

Great choice in TV.
Yeah that's actually a really good sound bar for the price.
If you want the extra oomph, have a look at the HT-CT260H if you can find a cheaper one anywhere.
