VTX3D HD7850 ref cooling warning

Hey guys,

Just a quick warning that the reference cooler on the HD7850 2gb standard GPU isn't up to snuff if left unclean for a few months (the dust build up wasn't that thick either! just a few mm's).

Unfortunately I didn't have time to look at the card as it was in a family member's pc, but I noticed that the card fan was spinning up harder. Then the inevitable text message came through last month saying that Windows wouldn't boot and that the screen output on colours was garbled.

Out of warranty (bought it back in 23 Apr, 12 from here) and I had a Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo III sitting in my draw which I could have fitted but decided against it as I hadn't overclocked the card at all.

Shame as I have just replaced it with my old trusty 6700xl (nvidia overclocked 6600 dell oem card) which still works to this day.

/rant over.

haha... i love a good rant...

I hate reference coolers, only the latest versions are decent on the high end cards i.e. 780/980 from nvidia with vapour chamber tech

My 7870 had a dodgy cooler on it from VTX3D and would overheat from the moment I used it, so I bought a Gelid Icy Vision for it and never seen a problem since... minus the sheer size of the cooler

Unfortunately they seem to have taken out the vapour chamber in the 980 according to a review I read.
