Hi!

My 7850 is starting to struggle in some games @1080p but I decided not to buy the GTX 970 now as I'm a little short on lolly. I figured it'd be better to see what AMD has in store for early 2015. However, I found a bloke who has 10 280x cards for a little less apiece than a half of what a new GTX 970 goes for (and I can easily sell my 7850 to make the upgrade even more affordable). All the cards are practically new (just unpacked) and come with 2-year warranty (which is fine since I don't even plan to keep the card for that long), the box and all the accessories are also included.

Do you think it's worth buying the 280x as a stop gap before proper 20nm GPUs? I reckon I could use it for quite some time before it really starts to struggle in games (and no, I don't necessarily have to run everything @60fps locked;p)...

The only problem I can think of is my PSU. It's a 500W OCZ SXSII and I'm not sure wheter it'll be up to the task. I have a 4790k running at stock clocks, 1TB HDD and a 256gb SSD. I know I should get rid of this PSU and replace it with something beefier, which I will eventually do (just can't afford it ATM).

If he has 10 for cheap then they're ex mining cards, make sure you have redeemable warranty on them before even considering them.

A 280x will be roughly twice as fast as a 7850.

Can agree with the first sentence, however the performance is more akin to 7950/7970 the 7850 is roughly the equivalent of the 270.

Well, he has quite a lot of other components as well (including different brands of 280x cards). He claims that the cards and all the components have barely been used and that they come from brand new PCs bought by a company that recently went bankrupt. The PCs were disassembled and all the parts are now sold separately. The guy normally sells car parts;p I don't find this entirely believable, that's why I asked him a couple of questions, hope he responds soon. The good thing is that he's based in the same city as me so I can inspect the item closely prior to payment.

Hmmmmmmmm sketchy, a guy selling PC parts who naturally is into car parts?!? I would inspect first just to be sure they're only mining cards and not in some way "hot"

I found his offer on an auction site, he's got over 2100 transactions with positive feedback and his company seems trustworthy so hopefully it's not a scam. There are also three 280x Vapour-X on offer for a little bit more than the Dual-X and 15 Asus 280x cards which are apparently brand new. Really tempted to pull the trigger for this kind of money.
