How retarded is TV?

I cannot cope with much tv these days, after ~60mins in and around dinner I've had all I can take!

TV is not what it used to be, RIP...
Frasier
Star trek
X-files (albeit this got a bit silly imo towards the end)
Futurama
etc.

The sport I want to watch can all be viewed online, we do Lovefilm By Post which I'm tempted to ditch for Netflix these days.

I don't really chill in the lounge much as my housemate is constantly watching reality tv drivel, so I am in my room watching superior shows on my superior tv.

We are/were big fans of factual programmes in this house. We don't watch much of anything else.

Perhaps the decline in quality has hit those channels the hardest.

Back in 2000, when I first had cable, you could watch the History Channel all day and it was all historical documentaries all the time.

Now it's Ice Cold Gold, Aireplane Repo, Wicked Tuna, Axe Men, and other rubbish. And that's being pretty unfair to rubbish, really.

Couldn't agree more.

The rapid dumbing down of TV has hit another level in recent years as National Geo, Discovery and History churn out dross after dross based on the exact same formula with the only difference being the type of 'job' they are following.

The mainstream channels are equally culpable as well as they continue to spew out the 'I'm a dancing celebrity with X factor but no talent' type garbage.

I spend most of my time with Netflix & NowTV these days and if wasn't for her indoors and the daughter I'd be shot of the TV license totally by now.

Agreed that TV has generally got worse across the board.

My biggest annoyance is the Discovery channels (Discovery, Animal Planet, History, Science etc.)

They used to have such amazing shows on them, now 90% of the programming is absolutely terrible. That Amish Mafia programme......seriously??? Just a load of scripted terrible terrible drama fake documentaries.

Also shows such as Big Brother, X Factor, Georgie Shore, Made in Chelsea, Only Way is Essex need to get cancelled ASAP.

On a scale of 1-10? Let's say 10 is herpa-derp-derpity-derpy-derp.

I have Sky's entertainment extra package. "Documentaries", free channels, and "premium entertainment" channels.

Mostly it's all ****, all the time. There's so much American BS, and I'm 99% sure only the dumbest of yanks would enjoy even that.

There is literally no value in programmes like "Ice Cold Gold" at all. It's like having a very slow lobotomy. I can't even watch for more than 30 seconds because it's that bad.

Has TV always been terrible? Or is it much, much worse today than ever before?

And why am I paying for Sky to pipe all this ***** into my house?

The History Channel these days seems to be dedicated to anything other than historical documentaries but there are some decent programmes on there. Pawn Stars, Counting Cars and American Pickers are all good shows. Sky Atlantic was great from what I remember, always had decent stuff on there like Blue Bloods, Chicago Fire and they were re-running The Sopranos when I cancelled. Couldn't afford to have HD, multiroom and then the individual packages on top of that but if I could I wouldn't hesitate to re subscribe.

If you ignore all the "American BS" and go out of your way to avoid everything American then not only are you cutting out most of the content on Sky but you're also missing out on a lot of great TV. As has already been mentioned stuff like Justified is absolutely brilliant.

You sound like you'd be better off with Freesat and some streaming service like Amazon Prime or Netflix.

I rarely watch tv nowadays. Their revenue from advertising tanked as the Internet grew so the quality of the shows has changed proportionally. My formerly favourite channels are suffocated by garbage such as Storage/Truck/Duck/Pawnshop Wars and the rest of the "reality" shows, there's just nothing to watch.

There are some exceptions as some TV series now have significant budgets and big names running the show (ie. True Detectives) but otherwise, I avoid. Besides, there are too many games to play and too many books to read. :D

Good?
They're male version of soaps. They aren't good at all. They're ok for background half paying interest, just about.

For those who don't watch a lot of TV, what do you do in the evenings. Or do you just mean you watch from other sources.

Personally, I watch very little TV (probably 5 ish hours a month, on average).

Rarely get time, to be honest. Get home from work at 6.30pm, play with the kids (age 4, 1) and help get them to bed, then re-heat dinner (wife will have had with the kids at about 5pm) and eat. By the time I've done that and cleared up the mess from the youngest eating it's about 8.30pm. Then there's usually some household jobs to do (making packed lunches, cooking for the freezer, vacuuming, or whatever), and that takes me until between 9pm and 11pm - wife will be doing something equivalent. Then, if it's not too late, it's time with wife, or an hour on the PC getting on top of bills, ordering the shopping, or playing games, before bed. And then up at 6am for breakfast with the kids.

I'm amazed people with families and jobs have the time to watch TV, really.

fat teens cant hunt

sums up tv today.

worst thing is the great channels as already said have become so fake. Discovery is so bad now for this.

Fake finding gold shows every hr, finding bigfoot  finding the original bible in a lockers :p who actually believes any of this horse **** :p

Further cementing my decision to not have kids yo!

I dunno. Whilst it would be nice to have a little more spare time, I wouldn't want to go back to spending ~60 hours a month between TV (which is crap, as per thread) and video games. There are some pretty awesome bits of parenthood too :)

Well I was thinking about the other things I do in my spare time (reading, music, baking, exercise, etc) of which I already don't have enough spare time to do them all. :p

Yeah, I would like a little more time for exercise, that's fallen by the wayside. And going out with friends has diminished a lot. Mostly, though, I just don't do much of the things I only ever did to fill time - like reading, shopping, pointless DIY projects, and TV and gaming. Parenting is generally more fun (or, at least, more rewarding) than those activities anyway.

In theme with the thread, I really, really, don't miss TV (we actually went without it altogether for 5 months when we moved house a couple of years ago). Even the big-budget US shows, which look good, and start great - I always found them too long, and would start to find it a drag by mid-season. Just felt like the endless trudge of a soap opera - even stuff like Sopranos and 24.

Tv has always full of completely trash. I've never watched TV since I was a kid watching cartoons before school.

These days, there are actually loads of great TV shows (comic book, sci-fi etc) but for those I just pre-order the bluray series or box set and watch them later.

Only thing worth watching live for me is sports but the sports I watch I just stream from America with separate purchases so still don't ever put the TV on.
