Just sold GTX 770 and now running with onboard graphics, but every 10 minutes the whole PC freezes at desktop...

System is:

3570K @ 4.2GHz
2 x 4GB DDR @ 1600MHz
120GB Samsung 840 EVO
630W Be Quiet PSU

Have used Driver Sweeper to remove Nvidia drivers.

Never had any issues before, just since removing the GTX 770.

Any ideas?

Hmm strange

Firstly try removing that OC, may be being funny with the OC

So the OC has been running fine and cool for about 12 months, no crashes at 1.17v. Tried upping to 1.25v just now... but still froze after 15 minutes!

Really bugging me, wondering if I'll have to reformat and start over...

I SOOOO don't want to tempt fate, but, here's a theory - what do you think?

Because the 4.2GHz OC was tested, stressed, and used for the last 12 months with the GTX 770 installed, now that I have removed it, could the OC need more volts because the CPU's graphics need a little extra juice?

Doubt it, the if the CPU is stable it's stable, but I'm not 100% on that. Perhaps returning to stock clocks will help but no real idea about it taking more juice
Again, seriously doubt it though

CORRECT..

Had to do a hard reset again.

So it's not CPU, that leaves PSU and RAM I guess?

Any ideas what I could try next? Don't really wanna do a clean install but will do if I have to.

Ok, try a clear CMOS - take the motherboard battery out for 15 mins and then put it back in. Then try taking one stick of RAM out, and put it in each of the slots, then try the other stick of RAM. One of them may have gone faulty for some reason.

One other thing. Since the GTX 770 was removed, Windows Experience Score wants updating. Makes sense.

When I click update, it makes the PC freeze almost immediately (rather than having to wait 10-20 minutes).

Taking a stick of RAM out one at a time also makes sense as you suggest. However, why would I need to clear the CMOS? Not doubting you, I just don't understand!

It'll just clear the BIOS to default settings fully, so any things that may have gone awry (changing display output from the GPU randomly etc) may be resolved. It's unlikely, but for 15 minutes you may as well try it :)

What exactly happens when the computer freezes? Is it just when your PC is on the desktop or browsing or it always happens no matter what the program?

Sitting idle SEEMS OK, but after 10 mins of even just light web page browsing, it freezes.

CTRL ALT DEL... nothing. Case reset switch... nothing. Have to hold down case power button for 5 secs and it powers down.

Other than removing GTX 770, only other change is that now connected via HDMI rather than DP, but can't imagine how that would cause this.

BIOS up to date, so just downloaded and installed latest Intel graphics drivers.

Wow.

This time, it froze as soon as it hit desktop!

Could it be Samsung 840 EVO SSD? Heard recently that there's something up with firmware on some of them (I again, have latest version).

Memory mate. Your onboard gpu uses it does it not? Only thing that's changed since removing the 770. It may need extra volts.

Just upped RAM volts from 1.5v to AUTO. Same issue.

Removed RAM sticks one by one, different slot at a time, still no good.

In summary:

* CPU now completely stock volts and multiplier.
* RAM running with stock volts.
* Latest BIOS installed.
* All RAM slots appear fine after testing.
* Latest Intel GPU drivers installed.

After 20 mins of light web-browsing, system locks. OR, after 10 seconds of Windows Experience Score updating, black screen and system locks. Have to to a hard switch-off to get anywhere.

Is it clean install time...?
