aorus x3 review

...., I've still had half a dozen people stop at my desk wondering what that cool laptop i am using is: "Aorus what?". ( And I had only had it for a day ).

Anyway, to sum up - top marks from me. Atom80 if you are still reading this thread, please pass my compliments on to the Aorus design team.

If anyone has any questions about my experiences, I'll do my best to answer.

Cheers,

El Zorro,

Thanks very much for the feedback and yes your post will be passed on to the AORUS team. We have worked hard to deliver something of a head Turner but with substance and performance to boot, glad it's floated your boat.

Have you registered for the AORUS VIP promotion? http://supervip.aorus.com/

Thanks Atom80

I've just discovered something that isn't obvious from the docs or the aorus control center: you can drive triple head ( 2 displays + lcd ) which is pretty impressive.

Both the descrete intel chip and the nvidia can handle 2x 1080p + 1x 1800p without breaking a sweat.

nice.

El Zorro, when would you guess they will refresh the x3 for the new 9xx series of gpu?

I'm certainly not in a position to hazard a guess ( Perhaps you meant to direct your question at Atom80? ), but the 9xxM is based on a completely new architecture (Maxwell) compared to Kepler 6xxM-8xxM so it may require more development time to bring one to market ( depending on how long gigabyte have been able to play with pre-production prototypes ).

Update: I suppose if the x7 has already been hinted then the x3 can only be a couple of months behind. Perhaps in time for Christmas?

Hey all - just wanted to drop an update on my Aorus X3

The ******* is still dropping wifi connection at random times. Sometimes within 5 mins from start up, sometimes after an hour. In any case, in order to re-connect need to forget the network and re do the login, or restart the laptop.

It does this at my work place, when Im travelling and at home, so its definitely not a router issue.

Tried to reinstall all wifi drivers and it still continues with this problem.

Is there any Aorus tech support in the UK whom I can call?

I just found something weird - when I uninstall the wireless driver, and restart the computer, the wireless driver appears to still remain on the computer (if I go into the device manager, the device for the wifi is back up and activated). I tried uninstalling it with the Intel pro wifi installer, and still when I restart the system, the device is still in the device manager, all connected and ready to go. So, I cant seem to get rid of it in order to do a clean install of the driver.

Any suggestions?

That sounds frustrating. I've not had any major issues like that, but I have noticed the odd drop when I get to the edge of my wifi range. I don't use wifi under windows much though, and tend to plug in to the LAN for gaming.

Windows keeps a cache of all installed drivers, so simply "uninstalling" the device doesn't actuall delete the driver. You could try installing an older driver version ( use driver rollback, or look for a newer beta one? )

Some things you can try:
- Use a different wifi channel on your router ( the one you are on might have high contention, and the Aorus isn't handling it very well )
- Make sure the wifi driver isn't reducing transmission power when running off battery ( might be a setting under the device properties, like "Adhoc Power Management" )
- Try using a different wireless band ( ie disable wireless-n )
- Make sure your laptop isn't stationed near any electrically noisy cables or devices ( power transformers and cables, fancy lighting ), resting on metal surfaces or is tucked close to a wall.

Install some wifi analyser software to see how strongly you are receiving the signal, and to check for contention etc.

For those of us who just bought an x3, do you think there's any prospect of gigabyte/aorus offering a 970m gpu upgrade option? Otherwise it leaves a bad taste to release a cutting edge gaming laptop only weeks ahead of a massive gpu refresh which they knew about...

Hey Mr. Petrov, installing older driver version and then installing newer driver version just keeps same problem active.

The solution with the router channels also doesnt help, because it does this on EVERY router i have ever connected to (I travelled 8 times in the last month, and all the hotel routers, together with my office and home ones, have been doing this drop of connection, despite me sometimes sitting right next to the router with the laptop. And I hardly ever run the laptop in battery mode, so its not the power transmission reduction).

Is there an official english forum for Aorus that I can write to their tech desk? Could it be that the actual wifi unit in my laptop is faulty?

Well, I have just about had it with this laptop. Even to log on to this forum and type a simple message, the connection has dropped three times. The worst part is, it shows in the bottom right as CONNECTED with full bars signal strength, when it really isn't, and you need to keep reconnecting to the router manually to get a few seconds of internet time.

What is the returns policy with Overclockers anyone?

Hi VasFURY,

Sorry to hear you are having a frustrating issue. I have just forwarded the thread to our tech support. They will post and advise.

Thanks,

Hi VasFURY

Sorry to hear of your problems!

It does indeed sound very frustrating.

I would suggest you contact our UK Service provider on 0844 8804528 as we may need to replace the WiFi Card and/or the WiFi cables.

Best regards,

Aorus UK Support.

Thank you Atom and GBUKTEL, much appreciated. I fully understand this is not your company's fault in any way shape or form, and it really is a big shame that this problem exists, because the laptop itself is really very good.

I will give the support team a call later today.

If they provide a replacement wifi card, will I need to get it installed in the laptop myself, or will I need to send it to your technicians and they would do it?

Thank you in advance,

Warm Regards,

Vas.

Hi again.

It would need to be sent to our technicians so they can perform tests on it to ensure that the fault has been rectified before they return it to you.

Guys Guys quick update - I found a more "recent" version of drivers for the WIFI card on Intel's website (than the version which was on Aorus website). On the intel forums it says that this card apparently is well known to glitch out, so they keep releasing new drivers for it.

I installed driver WIFI_17.1.0_e164 (I write it so that you can recommend it to other customers who buy this system, in case they experience same fault), and for the last two hours or so, the wifi is working without any disconnects. Fingers crossed that this is the solution. Will give you an update tomorrow or Saturday, but hopefully this is what will fix this fault.

I wonder if its a Windows 8.1 issue. My MSI laptop Wifi was doing the same thing a week or so ago until I updated drivers like you. Mine has now started working too. Weird.

Aorus guys, whats the word on a version of this with 970m graphics. Are we talking before xmas perhaps?

I'm nearly 100% sold on the aorus but as an owner of a Rift DK2 I dont think the 870m has enough power. It scores around the same level as the 660TI I had in my desktop machine until recently and that was not enough, certainly not enough for when the rift consumer version comes around next year and I want to be able to use the Rift with whatever laptop I buy hence I'm waiting on the 970m.

No plans for 970m version this year. So if you have specific needs for this GPU, sit tight until early 2015 :-)

windows 7

Has anyone managed it install Windows 7 on here? I am having issues downgrading and the Windows 7 install stalling due to RAID Drivers. I have been speaking to Auros Support and posting images of the error and trying different drivers but its not helping.

anyone had success?

Cheers
