Irrational fear of dentists?

Unless your dentist is a masochist you should barely feel the injection if at all.

I have had a lot of the injections and always feel at least a little pain with them, sometimes it's quite bad and sometimes not so bad, but I always feel pain with the numbing injections.

With me the pain isn't the issue anyway, as I have quite a high pain threshold, it's not trusting the dentist that makes me nervous, and that goes back to bad dentist experiences as a child (as with a lot of people) so I don't think it'll ever change.

You're the first person I've ever heard that said they hardly feel the injections.

I'm fine with the dentist local anaesthetic, doesn't feel painful at all.

The worst experience at the dentist for me was when I cracked one of my molars biting on a cherry drop and they had to remove my tooth. Even though I had local anaesthetic it was still an uncomfortable experience, and the noise was something else, hearing the cracking etc.

I also imagined before I went that with technology it would be a straight forward experience, but it was literally something like a pair of pliers (obviously not pliers) and he just pulled, at one point he got one knee on the chair to support himself while pulling.

With regards to the injections I find blood test injections worse...

Hmm I've had atleast a dozen injections so far this year (and 3 different dentists) unfortunately including 1 into the roof of the mouth and never felt anything more than as if someone had drawn a half inch line on my hand with a biro.

My current dentist is smoking hot and her assistant even more so. Pretty sure they will start to question the regularity of my check-ups soon.

I used to hate the dentist but I think that's because the dentist I had when I was younger was rubbish and having 4 teeth out in one go was pretty traumatic. The last 2 dentists I have had have been great. Recently had a filling done with no anaesthetic or injections of any kind which I was expecting to be horrific but was perfectly fine.

Out of ignorance can dentist do general anesthetics or is it a hospital job?

I don't think they are allowed to now, due to some dodgy experiences some patients had while being under, iirc.

There are designated (i.e. trusted) places you can go to though, it's not always a hospital job.

Consider yourself very lucky!

Wonder if its possible to elect to have them all out(wisdoms) to save having to inevitably deal with it again later on assuming they're not all eligible as it is.

Right guess I'll call them tommorow :(.

Thought I was going to drown there was that much blood!

On my last visit to the dentist to get a wisdom tooth out the dentist commented that there's a lot of blood due to my heart beating like the clappers!

The worried look on the nurses face didn't exactly fill me with confidence as the dentist said 'don't let it pool'!

Sedation. Seriously. I was terrified of the dentist and didn't go for many years. Finally, after a lot of wisdom tooth related pain, I went to a dentist who offered sedation (pills under the tongue) procedures. I had a 7 hour session in the chair involving 2 extractions, 2 root canals, fillings and a deep clean. Don't remember a thing even though I was conscious. Because I was so relaxed it made his job easy and my recovery a breeze - I didn't even need to take painkillers! I have had other work done since while being sedated and it's great. I don't understand why anybody would do it without, tbh.

Wonder if that's offered in the UK .

How long does it take you out for? I assume it's not a drive home affair?

To be honest I'm somewhat wary of sedation as I have a habit of lashing out when I'm woken up I assume sedation is similar.

Looks like it is: http://www.dentalphobia.co.uk/sedation-dentistry.html

You are out for the day. You can't drive obviously, and when you're coming down things can get a bit trippy :)

I'm also really bad when it comes to the dentist. Also have an irrational fear of them. I don't like needles either and almost have an anxiety attack when someone tries taking blood from me. Its daft as I see far worse things daily in my job (work in histology labs).

My fear comes from numerous bad visits to my old dentist in my teens. I have to have 2 fillings done and had to be put under for them to do it more easily and when I came round I was violently ill for around 6 hours. The dental nurse just pushed me out of the door whilst I was being sick all over the place and couldn't even walk due to the dosage they gave me. Due to that, I've never been back since. Its stupid, but I never want to experience that sort of treatment or feeling again.
