Will UKIP win its first seat in parliament tonight?

Well done Douglas Carswell on a epic win. He gained 21,113 votes (59.75%) on a 44% swing from the Conservatives.

And people here it would never happen ;)

I'm not supporting a UKIP government, but a few wins here and there might actually wake our government up a little bit!

UKIP right here, folks. Sign up, if you have a handy adult who can help you spell your name and construct a basic sentence on your behalf because you are an idiot.

"Prof John Curtice says Douglas Carswell's Clacton win is the largest increase in vote by any party in any UK by-election ;)

Can't wait to get out of the EU. The swing from Labour to UKIP was 18% people are seeing the light.

It's a bit of a misleading point to make though (and since you copied it from the BBC I'm blaming them too). Douglas Carswell actually gained less votes than in the 2010 general election (21,113 this time vs 22,867 in 2010), he increased his percentage share of the vote because there is now one more party and that's always likely to run the risk of splitting the pie further while as essentially the incumbent he has an advantage in consolidating his position.

Also this may be an example of voters actually doing it properly (albeit unintentionally perhaps) where they've voted for the man rather than the party.

Great day which will hopefully be a huge wake-up to the establishment. Carswell (and hopefully Reckless) will have less than a year in parliament to show us that UKIP is more than just another PR stage-managed political brand.

I'm minded of the Megadeth classic track Peace Sells and the lyric; "If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line. But it better work this time"

I think a lot of people on here are quite frankly bang out of order and the constant labelling as idiots of people who vote for UKIP is really quite appalling.

It seems like it's becoming in vogue on here to take digs and hate on UKIP voters. In a democratic society, people's voting choices should be respected and not subjected to ridicule just because their beliefs are not the same as yours.

Scientific studies show UKIP supporters to be very stupid. Grean and lib dem the smartest. [posting on mobile, so will quote a previous post of mine for references]
Well, right wing parties are for the stupid, according to research (see below). And UKIP made a bit of a thing about their relative failure in london council elections being due to the educated voter base.

Right wing for stupid people;

Green and Lib Dem are smartest, by quite a margin;

But, ignoring all that, my point was based on a background knowledge of the ignorance of UKIP-ers, and UKIP-supporter Logan_D's spectacularly incorrect and bigoted hypothesis.

Citation needed. Can't wait to see these "Scientific studies"

I expect the usual platitudes from LibLabCon now, we need to listen, it was a protest vote etc etc.

The problem is they never listen.
