Small car, tight budget

I've owned a 52plate Mk2 Ph2 Clio 1.2 16v for the last 4 years, Its been looked after and as a result its been a really reliable car to me, its now my mothers so I guess that reliability will soon disappear xD

I recommend getting the 1.4 16v doesn't feel as slow then.

Suzuki Ignis Sport. Will find one for £2k or less with low mileage. A good punchy engine that will return 40MPG+ on normal driving. Only needs basic servicing as the engine is chain driven. Disc brakes all around. The tyres are very cheap too as it runs on skinny 15" Enkei alloy wheels. They also have a full Recaro interior with aircon as standard.

My other half has one as a run around and it is fantastic little gem! Perfect cheap motoring while still being fun!

£1700 with only 51k on the clock. A Yaris T-Sport would be another alternative but they fetch a higher premium but could still find a decent one for your 2k budget.

They look funky but the nearest one is 220 miles away. Meanwhile, there's a Fiesta diesel that I'm viewing tomorrow, <5 miles away ;)

Diesel Fiesta, no thanks. Google DMF and injector problems, you can set yourself up for big bills especially doing low mileage.

Pointless offering you any advice though given your thread in GD, you won't listen and will make up excuse after excuse.

Lots of people in this thread have said "Fiesta, Yaris". In fact that's the most common answer!

But by looking at a Fiesta tomorrow I'm "not listening" to advice? Listen, you might not like me, but don't crap on this thread for no reason.

Not one person has suggested a Fiesta TDCi. Rather than getting precious, why don't you research more about injector and DMF issues?

It's not the right engine for you.

Please don't get a diesel if you're only going to be doing 10K miles per year. Don't even get one if you're going to be doing >15k miles per year.

A Fiesta is a good choice but please, get one with a simple, reliable, inexpensive, economical petrol engine, not a diesel.

Why? I do 10k in a 1.4TDi polo, and the fuel/tax saving is around £300-£400/year compared with an equivalent petrol.

Fine then, I won't get a diesel. Which is a shame, as the car was below guide price, but hey.

But I will ask why on places like WhatCar and Parkers they recommend the diesel variants very highly?

I've read a lot of warnings about the DPF, in general discussions. I've not heard anyone mention a DMF before specifically searching for it today.

So are diesels just not good cars for anyone then?

ye, for people who do long trips not start stop town traffic or 2 miles down the road every day.

Well that doesn't describe me either. It will most likely be used for occasional trips of 10+ miles. It won't be used every day, or perhaps even every week.

On the other hand, it will not see much if any motorway miles. Country lanes and dual carriageways are all we have down here.

I certainly won't be driving around town in it. If I need to go to town I'll walk like I always have done.

You could do a lot worse than look at the jazz no matter its image, as a tool they are perfect as far as small cars go.

No idea if the budget fits mind you

I'm not worried about image.

Just want something that's cheap, reliable, good MPG.

Whilst not a requirement as such, I'm a little reluctant to go for anything with a 1 litre engine (or less) as I would like to be able to overtake now and again, without necessarily going downhill with a tailwind :) I've done my time on a 50cc moped and I never want to have that feeling again :p

They aren't 1 litre engines

Sorry I wasn't specifically referring to Jazz's with that last sentence. I'm looking for Jazz's right now, in fact.

Where do they get their "old people car" rep from anyway? To my untrained eye they don't look any different from other more "hip" cars :p

lol, OK :p

Well there's a petrol Jazz (1.4 SE Sport) 40 miles from me, £2,300, 105k mileage.

To me that sounds like a decent buy - but would anyone think twice because of the mileage it's done? Or would you say that with my budget that's about the mileage I'll be looking at?
