so, at the moment i have a 270x and a 750ti.

now i know all the numbers say the 270x is the more powerful card and benchmark results agree that the 270x is faster.

however, the 750 feels smoother, firefox especially feels way smoother scrolling but even the benchmarks to the eye seem smoother. so am i going mad?

I don't want to sound redvsgreen but I've always felt the experience is better on the green team too. And yeah - I'll totally admit I'd rather have something that feels good than something that benches quickest.

People say AMD have better image quality, sharper, more colour depth, i don't see it and i have an IPS screen.

whether i'm using Intel's onboard, AMD or Nvidia it all looks and feels the same to me.

ditto, tbh im really not a huge gamer and when i do its mostly cpu heavy stuff from paradox.

ive pretty much always been ati/amd though so i bare no special favouritism for nvidia.

I'm with greg on this one and its more than likely just placebo. As humbug says, its been said for ages that AMD have better image quality and that quadro drivers give sharper images etc than even that, yet its all just rubbish really. Some profiles in games and programs have forced negative LOD bias which sharpens things up which also distort a persons perception of image quality.

Actually ATI(AMD) historically always had better 2D support. Always felt smoother on the older cards. Also certain shader effects used to look better on early DX11 cards

It could be something to do with power saving features? vendors seem to be getting more and more aggressive with 2D clocks so that they can reduce idle power usage, 270X might just have more aggressive power saving or higher latencies coming out of it (Zerocore?).

I have a GTX660 and used an HD7850 too and they felt equally smooth. However,in one game,ie,Skyrim the HD7850 2GB did stutter in one town more than the GTX660,but in another the HD7850 2GB felt smoother. OTH,I have dozens of mods in Skyrim ATM so I suspect it was a mod conflict.

Edit!!

BTW,the OP bought the card to play the next Civ game which is a Mantle title, and since Civ5 tended to like Intel CPUs more(the engine only really scaled upto 4 threads),I would really stick with the R9 270 especially since the OP has an AMD CPU.

just thinking, could it be due to an issue with the amd driver? i had the 14.9 wont install issue, then tried the beta which installed and ran ccleaner to clean up the registry and everything seemed good.

certainly the benchmarks ive run were spitting out good scores for the 270x but firefox especially is scrolling much much more smoothly.

At least at the time I tested my HD7850 and GTX660(November last year),I didn't notice much difference TBH!

The drivers are different now OFC and so is FF,although I have found FF to be more buggier than Chrome though.

Out of interest, what PSU do you have??

corsair cx430.

yes i realise in many ways ff sucks but i use a bunch of addons that chrome just doesnt have. i actually use waterfox so its a bit quicker but if i say ff everyone knows what i mean.

Pretty much the same reason I tend to use FF more, but its still annoying TBH!

PSU is more than enough BTW.

Are you sure, It has 32 Amps on the 12v rail (384 Watts) 180 Watt GPU + 125 Watt CPU, isn't that cutting it a bit close?

i had thought that and asked on here, peopel seemed to think it okay and i have ran the cpu and gpu flat out max and its all stable. so i dont think its that.

its possible its the card trying to be super power saving an thats why ff scrolling every so often seems to stutter maybe?

Its certainly not normal, if you are getting stuttering its an indication of a problem.

At idle they run in a low power 2D state, as mine does, as they all do, they power up if you have a lot of Flash crap going on in the browser or are playing YouTube as with those the GPU is used to accelerate encoding.

Maybe its not doing that as it should? perhaps you have some remnants of the Nvidia Drivers interfering with the installed AMD Drivers? I don't know, this is not a problem thats commonly come across.
