Best Horror movies to watch ???

Evil Dead trilogy

First one is a great Demonic possession B movie. II & III are comedy horrors. III being the most ridiculous one. But they're all bloody great. I think I'll watch them with the missus over Halloween as I haven't watched them in a couple of years. DEAD BY DAWN!

My big brother let me watch Alien when I was about 8. I didn't sleep for a week and have never found horror movies scary since then. There are a few I enjoy because they're just generally good movies - The Ring (the original), The Exorcist, Halloween (the original) and Candyman. Another good one I saw when I was younger that really unsettled me was The Medusa Touch...didn't really scare me like Alien, but it really messed with my head...especially the end.

By "pale" do you mean utter ******* ****? :p

Yes imo the original Japanese version was terrifying, the American remake was "not very good" :D

I remember watching it in the cinema and I didn't get a good nights sleep for ages afterwards

So if you get the chance watch it in the dark with the sound high

Good shout on The Medusa Touch.

I've been meaning to watch it again but I'm worried that it will seem horribly dated and not at all disturbing. I remember how it made me feel about 30 years ago and I kinda wanna hang on to that :)

Remember IT freaking me out the first time i watched it. In terms of pure fright though, another 80's obscura, Witch Board.

Ouija board film, it'll scare the pants off'a you, if you have the slightest wonder/fear of the whole thing.

I can recommend 'Cube' for psychological horror. Lots of suspense in it.

The 2nd Cube film, don't bother. It was the Apple iPod version of Cube lol.

The 3rd one, 'Cube Zero', is worth a watch, although I personally found one of the death scenes too much for me even though it's only a 15-rating.

Unlike a lot of people I think the American version of the ring was much scarier than the Japanese one and highly recommend it.

Halloween
Shutter(Korean one, American version unlike the ring was naff)
The exorcist
The omen

More recently I would say drag me to hell and the conjuring are both worth a watch. The woman in black is decent too

The only film to seriously frighten me was the Grudge (the American version).

I'm somewhat reassured of my opinion by the mini-review of it on cinemassecre, which reviews hundred of horrors: "everyone complains that this is a remake, even though it's by the same director... and people often say the ring is the better Japanese remake... but the ring just doesn't get under my skin in quite the same way as the grudge. Now, I watch horror films ALL THE TIME, by myself, in dark. This film scared the absolute **** out of me".

And it did.

If we are going with pure jump scares, I think the recent Daniel Radcliffe film, the Woman in Black, is a masterpiece. But for true unnerving hide-behind-the-sofa 'poop your pants at every noise you hear alone in the dark' experience, the grudge, every time.

Magic, 1978 fillm of psychological horror with Anthony Hopkins. Most unsettling ventriloquists dummy ever.

The Burning. One of the better 1980's slasher movies. Good if you are into your gardening implements.

I remember this one! Watched many years ago, during a Halloween party, we used to try and obtain the most gruesome horror films ever (as you do). 'The Burning' was trumped by another 1980's film, albeit banned, about a cannibalistic maniac on a Greek Island. I have to say, these films freaked me out at the time!

I now much prefer a god old spooky horror film with a good story. :p

My recommendations:

The Dead Zone
Julia's Eyes (Spanish Horror)

Yup

I watched The Grudge in the cinema, it's the first time I've ever wanted to leave the cinema during a film (out of fear!)

Two girls ran out screaming. As they did, me and my housemate turned to each other and gave each other the look of "shall we go too?"

Hate watching it, so damn creepy
