I for one welcome this move. There is nothing worse than walking through any town/city center and being forced to put up with this.

The sooner they enforce this (though hard to keep tabs on) the better

Full Story

Smoking in London's parks as well as Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square could be banned under proposals submitted to Mayor Boris Johnson.
Other councils across England are being encouraged to study the plans with the aim of discouraging children from taking up the habit.

Agreed. I hate smoking because it removes choice from people i.e. prior to the smoking ban if you went to a pub you had no choice but to inhale other people's smoke (cue the ultra-liberals whining about you had the choice not to go to the pub). Few things worse than being in a park on a hot day and having a waft of tobacco smoke drift over on the gentle breeze.

I was in the queue at a supermarket the other day, behind a bloke who had recently smoked a cigarette or something. He stank so much it almost made me retch. Hard to believe that this was considered normal not so long ago. Do these people realise how bad they smell?

ok lets ban smoking in an area that is surrounded by cars, buses and trucks. yeah that will really improve the air quality. what a load of rubbish.

you know medically banning smoking there will do sod all, but if they banned any sort of fossil fuel powered vehicle from there that would.

How many children take up smoking because it's a good idea? (None I'd hope)

They start smoking because it's illegal its "cool to do illegal things". Thus making it more illegal only adds to the issue not detract from it.

I think that makes sense?

Besides I'm pretty sure the money made from fags outweigh the nhs costs.

Glad to see most of the highly rated comments on the BBC site (from people who are claiming to be non-smokers) are saying what a ridiculous proposal this is.

I don't smoke and am glad of the smoking ban in public venues (pubs, restaurants, cinema etc) but to start banning smoking in outdoor places is just nonsensical, especially on any form of health related basis when you have diesel vehicles belching out their fumes 24/7 in the same areas.

Agree with this. In a city that is filled with pollution from vehicles, it seems like a pretty pointless exercise in the name of health.

Exactly, the fumes expelled from cars is massively more toxic and dangerous to health than burning tobacco so that part of the argument is utterly ridiculous.
I do however somewhat agree with the setting a bad example argument but feel it is going a bit too far to outright ban it, we need to continue to educate the youth about the dangers and health threat of smoking.
That is how we will eventually irradiate it, through education not legislation and the failed war on drugs clearly shows this imho.

Despite that smoking costs the NHS more than the gov get in tax revenues?

I would like to see the stats on this, if such a thing exists, because surely the tipping point will come (if it hasn't already).

I used to smoke 20 a day, then they cost about £6. Now they cost £9+ so an extra 50% tax in just a few years.

I haven't smoked since then, party due to health (and smell!) but I think the inside ban definitely took a toll, so it worked for me to an extent. I can't see how banning outside is going to help, unless you perhaps say 'no smoking near entrances/exits'.

I would love to see smoking banned outright. My girlfriend smokes, and even watching her do it annoys me. It just feels like an unintelligent, uneducated thing to do, which shows the smoker to have a complete lack of self restraint or pride in themselves.
There are literally no benefits to doing it. I've suggested she quit, and she claims she could any time she wanted, but every time she attempts to, she gives up after one day, claiming she needs to quit when she isn't stressed. It seems the irony is lost on her.

The more bans put on this disgusting habit the better to be honest, unless any of you can find me a single benefit to smoking which actually outweigh the many negatives.

I could rant about this for a long time. Ban it already!

Agreed, I think it should be banned in public places, including parks, high streets etc etc but I don't think smoking should be made illegal.

People should still be able to smoke in say their homes (unless they have non smokers living in the house) or garages. That way, darwinism comes into play :D and there perceived perception of freedom remains intact

Haha I know that feel.

Just need to get passed three days, then it becomes less of a physical need and more of a habitual one.

(Edit: I will still smoke a cigar on special occasions, and although this isn't really the exact same mechanism, you do feel the want for nicotine the next day. I can ignore this now as I know it will pass.)

Excellent. Sooner this move is implemented the better. Smokers are selfish individuals, I should have the choice if I want to breathe in your 2nd hand smoke.
