Stress testing 7990

Heaven is a bit glitchy anyway though. It's doing occasional glitches in heaven (tiny pauses) so I was wanting something else, that's more definitive, to confirm if it's working properly or not. 3dmark won't even load with it, and it was crashing previously albeit with a marginal PSU (HX620)

Those two things sound reasonably definitive :)

What are the rest of your specs?
The PSU is marginal like you say, especially if it's getting on a bit. Your whole rig with that card shouldn't be pulling much more than 500w, but if the psu is a bit past it, that could explain why you're having trouble.

that 620 PSU is maybe too small for a 7990............more like 850 to 1000W

People run 7970s on the Silverstone 450W SFF PSU in ITX setups, so I don't reckon it's that far out. 1000W seems like way overkill.

Rest of system is an i7 870 and SSD, optical drive and an H50.

I don't need to.
I've owned three 7990's and ran 7970 xfire for a good while, plus I also own a watt meter.

Actual experience>quoting the manufacturer's recommendation.

hoarder!!!

Please don't. :D

OK sitrep (now hooked up to 1000W Silverstone PSU):

1) 3dMark11 crashes were being caused by old version of 3dmark11.
2) Machine still crashes random e.g. when starting Rome II often.
3) Rome II looks like ****e even with all the settings turned up (idk - maybe it just does. This is my first time running the game)
4) The card has quite a lot of coil whine.
5) The machine scores ~13200 P marks on 3Dmark11

Hi Dave,

For the coil whine - use seperate outputs from two ports for PCI-e from the PSU. Dont use a splitter cable from 1 port from the PSU. This should reduce coil whine. When mine was new it whined but has disappeared over time.

BF4 with increased resolution scale if resolution ,1440p will get the card running at 100% if you have it.

GPU-Z also has a stress test built in if you run it fullscreen. Free and easy to install.

I ran my 7990 on an old Antec 650W true power trio with an overclocked i5 for months before I upgraded.

From memory Rome ran poorly when it first came out. unplayable even.

7990 hard card to beat for whatyou can buy them for today.
