Winter 2014 - Weather Predictions

Can't remember if it was 2011 but sometime around then it was pretty bad the roads were mostly impassable in my town for 3 days at one point.

You're probably thinking of 2009/2010 when it was down to -20C in loads of places across the UK. That whole winter right up to spring was freezing.

Solar activity at the moment will be offsetting the effects of Siberian snow coverage, etc. in regards to the chances of snow/wintery weather over most of the UK the current set of conditions though would mean that towards the end of the year and first couple of months of next year any significant lull in solar activity and/or lull in warming effects off the Atlantic would likely lead to brief but heavy wintery conditions, otherwise for the most part its likely to be relatively mild and wet.

Anything wintry would be good, even just a few days of heavy snow! But I really don't see the month after month of storms and flooding we did last time, it's a completely different situation this time around, global patterns are not the same

Britain is on track for its warmest year ever and that is likely to continue the odds of a milder winter due to persistence of climatic factors.

Still way to early to tell, wait until mid December and we can start to see what is on the cards.

However; August was rather cool, in fact this was the coolest August for the UK since 1993.

Obviously actually predicting what the weather will do at this range is impossible (especially for the UK), but it's still interesting to note the potential for some colder than average weather according to certain models / analogues from previous winters with similar setups ( Plus; I love me some snow :D )

usual scaremongering from the express..they will be right eventually I am sure

some snow in England

London grinds to a halt because of a couple of inches and the scots roll their eyes because theres been snow in parts of Scotland since November

Cold, rain and wind fine.... no snow or ice please!

Ok a dusting of snow for Xmas day would be nice for a change, just as long as its gone by the end of Boxing day. ;)

My prediction is it'll be crap as usual. Rain and wind.

Give me bitter cold mornings, with ice on the cars, frost on the grass and a wind to freeze your nipples off any day of the week over rain and wind.

Well Susan, I thought it was fairly obvious from the post that I meant comparatively - the winter of '10 and '11 was very cold, whereas last year I think I saw about 3 **********.

Also, vote to change this guy's name to Susan? :D

Gutted. :p

Revoke the ban and change his name as punishment instead!

If the weather pattern continues it could be a cold one, we've already had temps down to 2 or 3 degrees overnight up here in the last couple of weeks. Couple of mornings even had slushy frost on the windscreen.

It's dryer than normal and the nights are tending to be clear hence the lower temps. If this continues I wouldn't be surprised to see a cold November.

That being said, the express is lolworthy and long range forecasts are admittedly as much use as a rock on a string.

I'm hoping for more of the same as last year. I should have emigrated (to southern California) by December. :)
