*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

A lot of the success of PS2 was from it's usage of the DVD format which Sony could charge royalties for other company's using. The same happened with the PS3 and Blu-Ray. If you read up on it without Blu-Ray it's doubtful the PS3 would have been a success at all. Both consoles supported revolutionary new media playback abilities from the start which helped sales considerably.

With the launch of this gen of consoles neither company has this new revolutionary tech to launch with. MS tried with the new Kinect and it's all digial one user approach but soon changed to a more conventional use once word got out.

The biggest issue for Sony is it's financial situation and lack of funds to invest into the PS4. They have nothing to fall back on to pull then out the hole. MS have this funding available and can afford to loose a lot of money on Xbox that can be covered by other profitable areas.

My point was it's all good and well having the best hardware but if the company cannot support it then it's all a bit futile.

Here is what happened to Dreamcast from their marketing guy...

Your example really doesnt fit your point - Id just drop the example...

Yeah I think you do - but reading that article the Dreamcast has more similarities to the XO than the PS4. They just built a system that they couldnt support which I feel is your point; but looking at the detail how that system was designed and the market forces at the time strike a parallel with what MS has done with the XO...

While your argument is sound, it is simplistic

I was just trying to discuss people's thoughts on Sony's financial status and how this might be affecting things like server issues, Future of Sony with Playstaion etc.

I'm simple :)

Oh I know but Ill be blunt, irrelevant of Sony financial issues, the Playstation brand is more than than fine, theres not a (real) chance that it wouldnt find a new home as a running concern if Sony went under. Some could argue that that could be the best thing to happen to PS

Indeed as a brand Playstation hasnt been worth more than it is right now - theres probably 'bigger picture' conversations worth having regards all the consoles really...

EDIT: While Im on this train of thought, if it is sparked because of the PSN issues weve repeatedly suffered then theres probably more tangible/directly-causal reasons way before the general topic of Sonys financial woes. I feel that it seems to be brought up as some kind of cribsheet whenever something happens to PSN/PS4 when really the more pertinent question is 'What the **** is Sony doing with our PS+ fees that should directly pay for the PSN service?!? Show me the receipts!1!'

EDIT2: Also if you feel that Sonys long-term financial issues are affecting investment in PSN, then why didnt it affect PS4s R&D?

Anybody care to specualte that PSN has security issues with DDoS attacks that Sony aren't keen to have public and are an FBI matter and that is what is causing the frequent PSN issues?

The odd person says it is DDOS attacks on the PSN causing this. I recall both PSN and XBLive and some other smaller gaming networks were attacked a couple of months back, but it was reported on many sites.

Why is there not a bigger deal made about the current issues (slow logon, slow messages, slow friends list, slow game servers for Destiny etc)?

Seems strange to me that the gaming press and/or Sony have not mentioned anything concrete....

It hasn't been reported in general, at what i can find about whats happening with the network, Sony havnt HAD to respond cause no one in the public eye is pushing them for an explanation.

I think DDoS problems could be the case, there were 2 publicised attacks on PSN, then the hackers made death threats to Sony execs then their publicity disappeared when the FBI took on the matter.

That's what i mean, surely the people in the gaming sites must know about this and haven't reported it!! It's free articles or hits for them!!!

Just seems strange to me. It's negative news, but no-one is talking about it. Maybe, if it is in the hands of the FBI, they can't talk about it. I am unhappy about the DriveClub issues as well, but at least they acknowledge the issue and provide updates! Gaming sites reported on the crapness of the DC launch, but nothing about the persistent issues PS4 users are having with PSN in general!

The PSN being down is getting annoying, but I also have been looking at X1's to replace my PS4 partly fancy a change, partly has some games on there I would like to play, but also from a media point of view, with the new update having MKV, DNLA support plus plex app for it now.

Graphic wise I am not too worried, if I want bleeding eye graphics, will just go use my PC at 1440p res to be honest.

I think everything has it's issues, on Monday night as the PSN was down I thought I'd have a go of Titanfall on the Xbone, only to find "some of the xbox live features are not available, please try later", I couldn't get a game online and the friends list wasn't working. God job for single player games!

Yeah thats always been my mentality, Ive always got a SP game on the go, I do feel sorry for the people that can only play MP games - they dont know what they are missing!

Knowing how Ive fallen for Destiny theres definitely a form of addiction when you become so relatively irrational about the situation

Ok I had to wiki this and it says

So me not liking or unhappy about something makes me a Troll...?

I'm still lost tbh but kind of get what you mean.

TBH, I do not think of you as a troll as such but somebody who has a preference towards the X1. I however do not believe for a moment that you didn't know what the term troll meant! It's used in everyday language now. Plus you frequent this forum on a regular basis.

Anyway, getting away from the this. It appears Destiny was no1 world Wide on PS4 this month:

Also, a Playstation e-sports league is being launched:

"some of the xbox live features are not available, please try later"

Would it hurt Sony to have a similar message on their system or support website?

I agree everything has it's issues, but it's how you communicate the issue that differentiates your company/service.
