I'm no expert when it comes to Intel's architecture, if your running an Ivybridge CPU at the min is it best to skip Broadwell and wait for Skylake ? From what i can see Broadwell doesn't look a huge leap up technology and performance wise where as Skylake looks a bigger step up.
 
Skip them all and go straight to X99 and 5820K imho. 2 extra cores and quad channel DDR4 support for a similar price. You can get a X99 mobo for £150-£170 and 5820K for £260-£280 You can't go wrong.

DDR4 prices have dropped massively around the tinternet now as well, great time to move up to Intel's high end.

It's not if you're looking at spending 4770K / 4790K + Z97 money, for a similar price you can get an extra 2 cores / 2 threads, Quad Channel Memory, DDR4 support and a chip that doesn't need delidding.

If you're just going i5 + Z97 than that's a good cheap option, but looking at spending any more and 5820K + X99 is a better value option, as you're getting 50% more CPU for 5% extra price..

It would be the case if DDR4 wasnt so expensive /gb.

That does look interesting, i'd probably need to re-mortgage the house to get some DDR4 Ram though lol

Any suggestions on DDR4 Ram ? I found these on here, not sure how good they are as ive not used that brand before

There are some great DDR4 prices around, DDR4 has dropped sharply in price since X99 launch. Seen some 2666mhz that's not that much more than the same speed DDR3 sub £200.
 
Ive been thinking about going to the high end of Intel CPU's instead of upgrading to their next "mainstream" range instead but what are the odds that Broadwell will be noticeably better than the X99 range for gaming? I am buying mainly for gaming but as has been stated for 5% extra you can get a whole lot more general CPU power but I wouldn't want to go to X99 predominantly for gaming only to see Broadwell/Skylake have some significant advancement, if any at all that is

Only if your buying DDR3 RAM again, if you just need to upgrade the CPU and Mobo then a 4790K + new Mobo is better value. DDR3 has been around for a long time so anyone on an older generation Intel/AMD CPU will most likely already have DDR3 RAM.
