Unhappy in job, blocked internal vacancy

Hi all.
Another update. Was called into Chief Engineer's office and office and was asked if I wanted the job on current pay. I said no and was asked what I'd be looking for. I said 35k which is high but in line with what the job is worth due to extended time alone in China along with the responsibility.
The next day they told me no as others have been waiting longer than me for a pay rise.

This is a retarded reason but I am somewhat glad the answer was no.
I don't particularly care if others have been strung along for over a year (me 1 year).

I have really started to wind down now stress wise. They have conned a fresh graduate into doing my role, when he was hired to do project work. I will be selfish here and just be glad it isn't me. I will do all I can to hand over to him, but deep down I can tell he isn't happy.

10 more get ups!

Yup very strange/BS reason for refusing the hike from them... they could have just said no... 'others' are irrelevant to you as you've rightly pointed out. Frankly if they can't afford to or are unwilling to pay market rates then it is hardly surprising if they struggle with retention.

Glad to hear that you've got the situation sorted, certainly sounds like a fresh start in a new company is what is needed. :)

Rolls Royce are desperate for skilled people. They are expanding in Germany as in the UK they work in a skills vacuum - go outside their gates and there aint none. Its hell for similar employers in the UK

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.
The fresh graduate they have conned into doing my role gets a huge wedge more than me and the same as others who have been there ten years and are awaiting (1-2 years of ongoing promises) promotion to senior engineers themselves.
EDIT: Sounds like I'm moving for the £. Actually the salary raise I lose to travel but I don't care!

@marmalade: This new job will involve working for Rolls Royce at times which I'm excited about.

Its a pity you can't name and shame the company and place you work for. I know what it's like to have been done over by an employer and had to force myself not to walk out as I thought I was going to be made redundant (I didn't give in to the using bar stards). But my current employer treats me with more respect.

Its understandable you turning the chance to work abroad down if you've got commitments. I wouldn't blame you or your replacement for walking out (I've seen a few walk outs in my time, no kicking off, no noise, just other staff deciding they've had enough and just walking out and even the two security guys have done it). But for me, working in China could be interesting and I'd be glad of a chance to visit the original Shao Lin temple as a tourist).

It does feel good to have a new option! I will obviously wait until my contract is signed and returned before handing in my notice!.

Nice one! Have a pint of kronenbourg 1664 on me;););)
Staying on until you've signed your contraxct (no matter how badly your current employer is treating you) is a bonus pint in your favour.

But I wouldn't blame you if you told them to ~~~~ themselves and just walked, even if it was giving them what they wanted.

Its a pity you can't name and shame the company and place you work for. ...

You don't need to name and shame. If you'd like, you could give us a link to or info about how to find your LinkedIn profile and we can all have a read and give you advice about how you can improve it. We'll take a thorough look. :)

I'm doing my contracted notice period and keeping my head under the radar.
My department will be left in a complete mess as it has been understaffed for months.
I've joined linked in but will create a full profile later.

Are they trying to drum up enough issues to sack you instead or something?

In a place like that I think I'd forgo my final pay packet and just leave without notice

From what you've said previously, I'll be honest and say I'm not surprised in the slightest.

1. Two products are due to be shipped next week, at circa 200k each. I have been told the design is wrong and need fixing by Friday or the customer pulls out. A design cannot be created, drawn up, bought and validated in a week. I did not start this work but am trying to finish it. The error I did not know of until this week.

2. I have also had a >£2m order thrown at me for 5 weeks until due date when lead time on quote my colleague created (before he quit) was 10 weeks. Yet leave in a week and 'need to pull my finger out'. What is the point in quoting for work with a lead time if someone in sales ignores it?

3. The icing on the cake is the new graduate taking over from me was conned into a external visit and he did not get home until midnight (pay stops at 5PM). I refused to go, explaining the situation I linked in the OP as my reason.

4. Being *******ed for not creating hand over documents yet I can't as I am still doing new work.

At least this week has 100% confirmed that I am doing the right thing.

Not your problem.

Need to pull your finger out or what? What are they going to do if you work at a leisurely pace?

Very much this, your leaving OP so this should be water off a ducks back, it would be mine if I was there, ide just calmly point out I'm leaving so the problems is entirely yours & not mine, then plod on till my notice is done. :)
