I believe it's called linear interpolation - or extrapolation cant remember which one is which.
Basically, the miles in MPG is not relative to any actual miles you've travelled, you don't actually have to have driven 150 miles to have a reading of 150mpg. The figure of 150 miles is not actual-physical, it has been interpolated so it can be represented on a relative scale in the form of distance over gallons.
Basically this (extrapolation).
100 miles for the needle to move at all, ~150 miles before it it hit first bar on the dial.
It would have been nice to get 150mpg out of it. Realistically it was more like 30

Correct, it does work, and it does give you an average.
It doesn't give an average of anything useful or resembling your MPG, but it certainly gives an average of "something"
