PCIe x1 work in PCIe x4/x8/x16 slot ?

As per the title, I have my 2nd GTX 980 card covering my PCIe x1 slot so I cant plug up my Xonar Essence, will the card work in a x4/x8/x16 slot even though the slot is bigger ?

Thanks. If I put it in my x4 slot, will it bring the x16/x16 slots my gpu's are in down to x8 or x4 too ? or will it not touch them ?

Would depend on the board. My board manual tells me what speeds the pci-e will run from 1 card to 6 cards inserted. So my 2 GPU's are x 8 with Wifi and Raid card in other slots.
