Been looking at GPU's for a few weeks now and just cant make my mind up what i want. Got a 7950 at the mo, logic says G1 but i cant help keep looking at the Lightning.

It's hard not to recommend the 970, big boost clock from stock, would dump less heat into the case and has Gsync+PhysX (things you need to decided for yourself are worth anything!)

That LTG though, good price and a beast of a card.

The lightning just looks like a big chunk of Quality. I'd love that in my case where as the 970s look a bit naff compared, also not likeing all this talk of whining.

only thing with lightning is 750w psu min and power usage.

if you look at the benchmarks they aint that much faster than normal 290x.

also consider they need two 8 pin connectors and a 6 pin on.

970gtx will be same performance.

I'm sure you don't have to use the 6 pin unless your going to push it big time with OC.
I have an xfx 750 PSU so no probs there.

Anyone know around the maximum £s I'd get from ** No price checks outside of the MM **

MM=Members market you have to have X number of posts and been a member for a certain period of time
IIRC post number is 1000 time i have no idea,, If you cant see it in the forum list you dont have access

I just swapped from a 7950 to 2 970's, however to be honest, 1 970 would have been fine on its own. I run at 5760x1080, 7950 got chuggy at that resolution, one 970 on its own almost doubled frames for me.

Both are good cards if you can get a 970 that doesn't sound like a PMT woman.

** Deleted quote removed **

** No price checks outside of MM, so don't answer them **

the GTX 970 is dead silent, the fans hardly even spin.

the 970s that have coil whine are overclocked too far ....you'll notice most of them are the MSI ;)

HI there

Just to make the decision even harder!

MSI 290X Lightning is a product built from the highest quality most expensive components and designed for extreme overclocking. Its raw power and performance is very impressive and the quality of the PCB, components and cooler is amongst the best out there, they are also very quiet as the cooler is massively over-engineered.

970 G1 is not a flagship extreme product, so the quality of components are not as over-engineered, but are still good. Overclocked to the maximum the 970 G1 will compete with the Lightning for sure, but the 290X overclocked should out perform it.

You would not be disappointed with either, essentially the choice at £200-£300 sector is now huge with incredible deals on 780, 780Ti, 290 and 290X, then factor in the new 970 and its a real tough choice.

I like gaming without having to mess with a card, overclocking is fine for benchmarking but for 24/7 gaming I just want to switch on and game, so prefer no overclocking utilities in the background or any chance of instability, as such I'd go for out of the box performance and that is something the 290X and 780Ti win easily. :)

well there you go..the Lightning runs cooler than other 290x cards anyway....but it's only a tough choice if you stop and think about it for too long ;)

I would have thought you'd always have an overclock of some kind, more so with these new cards (If you run any) :)

Gotta shift the old tech some how eh... :p
