*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

I'm going to guess they either didn't expect to sell as many PS4's as they have done so didn't invest in the infrastructure required or they didn't care enough to invest in it. Either way, given how it falls to its knees whenever a new game gets released it's obvious a simple firmware update isn't going to solve what appears to be a very serious problem.

I can imagine that they were quite surprised to see the numbers themselves when they started to sell.

I do think if this is the case and reason why the network seems to have so many issues it would be down to under estimation rather than not caring.

I would like to think so anyway

Using my PS4 is my first experience of PSN so I've got no point of reference but I believe Sony had similar problems during the PS3 era? If they cared enough to fix it they probably would've done long ago unfortunately.

Hope I'm wrong but it's something people seem to have been willing to put up with last time out, I'm not so sure people will be so forgiving now we're in the digital download and always on age.

Coming from a 360 I won't be willing to put up with it forever. I expect a similar level of service as this is more expensive than the 360 sub.

It can't be that at all, Sony where talking about how many millions they where aiming to sell in the first year.

We are in the digital download age for sure. Weirdly though on that topic while i can't live on pc without steam, I don't think any of the consoles have made a good library style like steam and i like the nostalgia of having my games on disk.

I didn't really use psn on ps3 ever.

Live was a dog in the early 360 days as MS struggled to ramp up the servers to meet demand as well, I remember it was up and down for weeks at one point.

They will have planned and signed contracts for the steady increase of servers as based on sales projections long before the PS4 was released, I agree I don't think those projections were probably optimistic enough to envisage current sales levels and they are currently struggling to keep up.

I think it should be assumed that the constant "maintenance" is new servers being brought on-line and tested but they probably can't do it quick enough at this present time.

Christmas is coming as well. If they can shift over 500,000 units at retail in the USA alone in August, god knows what will happen then.

Saying that, my download speeds have always been excellent from PSN for physical content just the other stuff has been a bit flaky at times. I updated the firmware on my EVO drive which is in my PS4 and ended up wiping the drive yesterday and downloaded over 70GB of data maxing out my fibre connection pretty much constantly, that never happened with the PS3.

I still don't think they were expecting the sales they have done, in the US the PS4 outsold even the PS2's best September and we know how much of a sales monster the PS2 was.

They stated that PS+ subscriptions doubled in September also.

Whilst it's no excuse I don't think Sony expected the amount of sales or the amount of people that would be online.

I'm sure they will sort things.

Sounds like Sony has been struggling for years though..

It was a decent enough service on the PS3 bearing in mind it was free, and PS+ was very good value for money.

They are clearly struggling to get enough tested servers online quick enough at the moment though. It's probably most who bought the Destiny bundle will go online and it sold a lot.

Yet Sony knew what numbers they where seeking though. They announced them when trying to reassure investors.

At the start of a new generation logical manufacturers would expect to at least shift the first 5-7 million units they make easily unless something spectacular happens.....

I'm not sure even in their dirtiest dreams that they would have expected to shift the amount of units they are at this point in the cycle. PS4 is currently exceeding projections by quite a way.

It's kind of ironic that the more PS4 consoles Sony sell the more money they loose. They need more AAA games to re-coup the loses. But they need to invest a huge amount of money initially to do this. I think this is where they are struggling. The PS4 launched with Sony in quite a bad financial position and I do not think they can financially support the huge growth and sales PS4 is demanding.

Just my opinion of course :)

And they knew this from the start of the year, no excuses not to start upgrading their servers and backbone. Can't imagine how bad Xmas is gonna be for PSN.

The PS4 is profitable, and the PS division could go as a stand alone company if it needed to. Companies, how do they work?

Just so we are clear, adding new servers is a little bit more complex than ringing the server shop and asking them if "They do servers innit?" I know you might find that difficult to believe.

If PS4 was selling like the PS3 did there wouldn't be a problem.
