The time is nigh

What have you specced your Granddad for just browsing the web?

CPU: Pentium anniversary K edition
CPU Cooler: Stock (No need for overclocking)
GPU: MSI HD 7700
RAM: Corsair vengeance 8gb green
PSU: Superflower Golden Green HX 550w
Case: NZXT H440 (Black / Green)
Motherboard: ASUS Z97-A
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
SSD: Crucial MX100 128GB
OS: Windows 8.1

Overkill? I know.

Why get a k edition if no overclocking? Only a small extra expense but no advantage. Also, total overkill on the graphics front. For web browsing I'd probably drop the graphics card totally, cut the power supply back, get a much cheaper motherboard and drop the traditional HDD, bump the SSD up in size a bit and leave it at that. Cheaper and simpler.

I know it's overkill, but he needs the space for his totally legal movies (yarrrr) and his pictures. I do think the k version is nessecary, since then I can over lock it when it starts to slow down.

You keep saying that it "doesn't hurt to be overkill"
Just buy the most expensive parts available if that's the case.

Specifying a 550w psu and a discrete GPU for media playback and Internet browsing is simply a waste of money. By the time that computer would slow down, overclocking the CPU would make essentially zero difference.

Are you sure something like a NAS and an ultra book wouldn't be preferred?

If these are for gaming, you won't need the i7 and an apu for the browsing machine is more than enough. I would also remove the 980 and get a 290 or 970.

After a discussion with the family, the idea of a nas is possible, but unlikely. Our main issue with it is the space it would require, since there are 8 drives already listed, plus 4 I own, then 3 from my brothers, then God knows how many my dad has in his current rig. I know we could do a partial storage of a nas, but then that defeats the purpose, since if we store some of our drives in a nas, and some in the case, surely it would be easier to leave all of them separate.

However, we did decide we would get a 6 port nas, where we are putting 5 wd reds (4 x 2tb for each c: drive and some other important documents, and a 4tb red for our cctv system that we should be getting soon to record all video, then clean it out every month or so, did see the wd purple, so might swap out with that)

Ultra book for my grandad is impractical, as much as it would be useful, his poor eyesight and large hands make the screen size and small keyboards obsolete, thus making him have a 27 inch screen and a large keyboard much better.

I understand why you think it's overkill, but I added a GPU for a reason, if I go around, which is at least every week, I like the idea of being able to game there too. I am probably going to overclock the pentium, as it seems to get a lot more juice out of it. I'll buy a noctua most likely.

Already own both 4770ks, since they're in our computers, these aren't purely gaming computers, I do some video editing, which is why I am buying the 4790k, and a lot of image work with photoshop, my brother tampers with streaming occasionally, then posts that online. The orange one is just a gaming rig, but I already own the 4770k.

I must say though, I don't like pc building, I can't make my mind up again! Now I've found caselabs, and their Merlin SM8 case looks beautiful, reallllyyyy tempted to buy it.

After a lot of people thinking that the multimedia pc needs to be weaker, smaller, cheaper, I decided to change some things around:

CPU: Pentium Anniversary Chip - chose this because of its great overclocking and its good power efficiency.
CPU Cooler: Noctua NHL12 - good cooling for an overclock.
Case: Xigmatek Aquila window black
PSU: Superflower golden green 450w
Motherboard: Gigabyte H81M-S2PV
GPU: MSI R7 260X - chose for its sweet spot gaming.
OS: windows 8.1
SSD: Crucial MX100 512GB
RAM: 4gb (1 x 4) Kingston hyperx
Wireless card: Asus PCE-N53 300Mbps

Price: £564.84 considerably cheaper than the last!
