Paralysed man walks again after stem cell transplant from his nose

There's only two isn't there? 2005 and 1950 something.

Everybody knows the story but nobody has read the Book! ;)

Bit like "Robinson Crusoe"

(I must confess, I dont think I have either to my shame! :( <FX:BLUSH> Must have it somewhere though! I'll look for it tomorrow)

And yes, the 1950's version is definitely superior!

#1 on movies almost always is!

(Walter Lords "Night to remember" is the best Titanic movie too, though of course it wasn't actually the first, and some of the more recent ones have also been pretty good too, in their own way! AAAnyway, I digress!)

Haha touché!

I must admit to not having read the book. It's been on my nightstand for ages but Tom Clancy/Dan brown takes priority :D.

Well they do don't they!:D

Dan Brown is like Mike Creighton, they both introduce enough reality into their stories to make them almost drama documentaries!

(I think it is a huge shame that Hollywood fails to take the opportunity to use cinematic interpretations of these books to introduce real science to the general public. "Timeline" for example was a travesty! The whole point of the book story was totally lost in the film version! :@( )

I think deception point would make a cracking movie adaptation especially with the recent nsa controversies.

I haven't read any Mike creighton before I'll have a looksy. Cheers.

Great news for a person. But for humanity it is a double edged sword.

Steve Jobs said:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Imagine how different humanity will be when peoples lives are immeasurably long. It won't be for the better.

Image being a light that burns half a bright because it burns twice as long.

Yes. There was also the TV series which is terrible. And there was the musical version by Jeff Wayne (which is incredible).

Anyone who hasn't listened to the Jeff Wayne version should do so. I still have my parents vinyl record from the 70's. I listened to it in amazement as a child and one day will probably frame the album and hang it on a wall. It introduced me to Sci Fi and means very much to me.

The Jeff Wayne version is of course the original to which I was referring ;)

On a sidenote, the rerelease which features Liam Neeson is pretty darn good too! If just down to the fact that it's more or less the same. Liam Neeson has a sexy voice. What more can I say?

Thanks. I will have to try that one. Although the sheer presence of Richard Burton's voice on Jeff Wayne's version is hard to beat.

Anyway, sorry to drag this thread off topic.

Lol judging by previous posts in this thread I don't think pop culture references count as too far off topic :)

Just to finish off the conversation I don't think Liam Neeson's beats the original, but it's quite well done and different.

back on topic.....

is this actually about stem cells at all?

I mean, are these OECs stem cells themselves, because the way I read it, they are different:

- they serve a purpose which requires the regeneration of nerve tissue throughout adult life
- stem cells come from embryos/zygotes
- stem cells adapt to become whatever type of cell is required for their surroundings, whereas these seem to only facilitate the growth of new nerve cells, in a catalytic fashion

I mean, it's certainly similar in operation to stem cell research that has been in the public eye previously, but the way I see it, with this they [the vocal objectors to stem cell research] have no avenue to attack this on any moral grounds.....WOOOHOOO :D
