Hi all,

thinking of watercooling my rig for the obvious benefits in cooling and sound output. I have a AMD 8350 with a sapphire r9 280x, all housed in a bitfenix ghost.

done a bit of research and came up with this list

Just double checking that this would all work in harmony before purchasing.

cheers

The gpu block requires a mounting plate afaik(dont think ocuk sell them).

R600 plate according to ek cooling config(cant find it on ocuk/cant link as they're all competitors sorry).

From personal experience the EK dcp is quite a loud pump especially in a bay res(since you have a ghost I assume you want silence). Are you at the top end of your budget?

It looks as though you could fit 2 x 240mm rads in there if you want, should lower the temps/noise a bit.

Also do you have enough fans for the rads?

Thanks Mynight for the response,

Yeah I think I could put in another 240 however it would remove my drive bays for hdd/ssd's.

By no means am I at the top of my budget, and if you could suggest anything that is whisper quiet I'm all ears!

Fan wise I will be using the corsair SP's unless suggested otherwise

the gpu block will not cool the vrm so you still need fans cooling and they need to run fast when under load.

the cpu block is very good

you would be better wilth a DDC pump and a long tube res, the more water in your loop the better it will be at staying cool

I would go for a ddc or D5 pump as well, but the volume of water makes little difference. A kettle will still boil whether it is half empty or full, it just takes longer......

The larger reservoir will allow the system to cope with short term increases in heat input better, but to keep it cooler you have to remove the heat, that means bigger/more rads.

Corsair SP are fine. Since scythe stopped making the GTs its either Corsair SP or Noctuna (well afaik).

Yeah DDC would be my personal preference as well. Chuck it on a fan controller(not mobo one) and you're good to go.

Only £10 more but an all round better pump. You can place it on a lump of foam to reduce vibrations further.

You could consider getting the Hardware Labs radiators SR1s;

While the EKs are great rads personally for a quite build I'd go the lower FPI rads. You sacrifice some cooling ability but it allows you to run much slower fans. The amount of cooling you'll lose will be minimal. I currently have 960mm of Hardwarelabs SR1s cooling 7970s and a 3820. Fans are currently not even running and I'm getting temps of 38 on the cpu under 20% load.

Afaik the amount of water doesn't affect your temps. Once its warmed up and reached saturation with the ambient temperature it wont make any difference. Maybe it will take a bit longer to reach saturation but it would be a negligible length of time.

hmm, may think about upgrading my gfx card to a 290x so a can get a full cover gpu block, unless anyone knows if the sapphire 280x is capable of using the 7970 version?

Seeing conflicting results on the web, ek saying none available, other forums saying a EK ASUS Radeon R9-280X version fits?

if your not in a rush you can save £25 on the cost of the pump, there £55 and i paid £30 ever other month there put on a weeks offer.

i would still say get a moosive tube res or ever a bay res of your wanting to have the flash factor when ppl look at you pc , yes rads are better at cooling. but also more water is good as it take longer to heat up a larger volume of water so you dont get the fan rpm's all over the place

don't forget the liquid! maybe even some angled fittings?

Agree angled fitting can make such a difference to the build.
You will also find that mayhems have a very good rep for the fluid. and has the widest choice in colours and types(sorry did not mean it to sound like an advert)

It's a sapphire 280x only about a year old, sending back for RMA, I believe one of the fans has actually not been working for some time, and rather then send back a while ago I thought I would just get water cooling in. so most likely overheating issue.

yeah watercooling is off for the moment while I figure out what I'm going to do, maybe just upgrade to a couple of 290x's
