£1200 Upgrade

So I have a final budget now of £1000 give or take £200ish to upgrade my current system, and getting straight into it I have a couple of questions but also some ideas:

- Is the ROG Swift worth the premium price of £670? Would it be worth waiting a while to see if anything else is released/the monitor goes down in price? It's a lot of money to spend on a monitor and obviously that means you're losing out on other potential components, but if it's worth the plunge then I'll more than likely be getting myself one (included in the budget). I've been using these 60hz 1080p monitors for way too long and want something bigger and better for an amazing gameplay experience.

- I want this upgrade to last me for a good 3-4 years AT LEAST so I was thinking that I could maybe go for an X99 upgrade, including a 5820k. Now I don't do too much work which is usually related to the X99 platform, however I've heard that it's great for future-proofing as games in the future are likely to be using more cores? I'm not sure, but I want it to be sustainable for at least the aforementioned period of time, so if it's worth spending the extra money at the gain of sustainability then I'll more than likely go for an X99 combo. I was already thinking of replacing my RAM anyway to some higher speed stuff so that in theory reduces the cost of DDR4 a bit more.

I'm asking if you could please play around with the budget a bit and see what you can come up with, and also your opinion on the points mentioned above, and include a ROG Swift in it if you feel it's worth the money.

Please ignore my signature, as at the time of the upgrade I'll have a GTX 980 installed, and that's not included in this budget. Here's the rest of my system:

i5-2500 (Locked) @ 4.0
(GTX 980)
8gb 1600mhz
BeQuiet System Power 7 600w
AsRock Z68 Pro3

Also, please no comments saying wait for Broadwell/Skylake etc. as I am going to be upgrading soon and don't want to wait the extra time for the new chipsets. Forgot to mention, the system is primarily used for gaming (will be playing a lot of AAA titles next year)

Cheers

Hi,

What case do you have? what about after market cooler, do you have one?

Can you maybe list clearly what parts you want (CPU, board, PSU etc etc)

Ah yes sorry about that.

I have a Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, and my cooler is a cheapo Raijintek Aidos.

I think it really all depends on whether or not I go for the ROG Swift, but as far as the other components I'm looking at changing, they are the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. I already have a 250gb 840 Evo which I forgot to mention in the op and have good peripherals already.

With if I told you that the Z97 option above is more future proof?

And I can guarantee it for 3 years;)

I'm just judging it based off of what somebody else said in a 4790k/5820k debate thread as far as future-proofing is concerned. The ROG Swift does look like such a beastly monitor and I don't think I'd be willing to compromise it at this point just for the six core and DDR4 when I won't be doing hardly any tasks that make use of the extra cores.

Is that Z97 bundle alongside the H105 ok, or are there better deals available?

Cheers

H105 is good dude, so is the H110, one is wider and the other is thicker.

What about the boards in the different bundles available? Any real difference between the UD3H and the Gaming-7? If not might as well go for the latter for an extra 20 quid saving, although I do think I prefer the all black/yellow or orange accent board.

Also would it be worth buying some extra fans for a push+pull config on the cooler?

Thanks for the help. I assume a 980/i7-4790k would be fine for my psu stated in the op? Specifically I'm talking about the GALAX SOC Gamer 980 as I think that's the one I'm going for, but from what I've read it does consume a bit more power with 2x8 connectors.

Yep.

Should be able to do a quick and simple overclock on the Z97 platform.

Yeah I saw, that excellent offer. Will definitely be the one I go for.

Which 980 would you suggest out of the reference design, the upcoming Galax SOC Gamer, or the Inno3D Herculez one? The SOC has higher base clocks out of the box but it uses 2x8 connectors whereas the Inno3D uses 2x6, at the cost of 70mhz off the base. Would it perhaps be worth going for the Inno3D as well for more OC potential? Heard good things about their coolers as well but don't know much about the non-reference Galax ones (I don't think I've seen that design before that's on the SOC Gamer?).

Alright. Now I just gotta decide whether I want to go for the GPU first or the CPU first. On one hand I want to get the 4790k as I wish to start streaming soon and streaming at a decent bitrate is killing my 2500, and not only this I can also wait to see what AMD do in terms of the 3XX series and see how they match up against the 970/980. On the other hand though I want to get the GPU first as I've got my eyes entirely set on that ROG Swift and not sure if there are going to be any similar FreeSync monitors available within the next few months which could rival and/or force a price drop of the Swift.

The problem with waiting for the 3XX series to be benchmarked is that if they're not that comparable to the 980 equivalent then It'll be at that time again where it'll be another few months before more cards are released and I'll have wasted potential time with a 980...

Some decisions are just too hard to make!
