Car Suggestions

Could pick one up for cheap, it's not gonna depreciate very much and doesn't have a boy racer stigma so might not give silly insurance. Especially the 1.6 versions.

Given the number of ***** that slam them on coilies so "sick lows" and then crash them I'd say they are heading towards (if not already) stupid insurance pricing.

Mazda 3 mps mk1
Mazda 6 mps
MX5
Saab 9-3

If you want smaller, Those little 1.4 TFSI engines are canny and in all sorts atm.
Really like the polo my brothers mate has.
I liked my Ibiza until it had a little slip :(

But for the meantime what car should I get for a performance increase without having to worry about insurance I currently pay £984 a year.

£984 for a 1.6 Astra? Then anything with a smidgens of "performance" is going to make your eyes water. When I was 19, I was paying £600 for a 1.6 Focus, which then went down to £320 when I was 20. I bought a Focus ST when I was 22 which was £600 to insure.

Anyway, it's clear you want a new car, but don't spend £12k on one, spend £4k max, this car will only last 2-3 years until you can insure pretty much anything for a fair price. Look at something lightweight, with a decent little engine in it, for example a Fiesta Zetec S will feel quicker and more responsive than your current 5 door Astra, but shouldn't break the bank in terms of insurance.

Have you run some insurance quotes on these cars you want yet? Fairly sure that'll decide if you want them or not
this... my insurance didn't really drop until I hit 25, it definitely didn't go down between 17 and 21 thats for sure lol.

As to the golf... enjoy your extra premium on that one, trust me I had a golf (not a gti) and it automatically gets a premium due to the gti being 'popular' with the wrong type for insurance.

I could get a 2 litre 140bhp Sirocco next year and the insurance would be 1k

So I'm thinking age increase and 1 years of no claims is going to make a difference.

OP, sorry can you please be more specific?
You mention performance, and in the opening post talk about a TD, which is just a contradiction in terms.

Do you mean you'd like "moderate" performance, but in a car that looks nice?

If you do, you might want to consider cars like an Alfa 159. Now pretty cheap. Not a genuine "performance car", can be had with a decent diesel, looks ace from the outside and has a lovely interior that genuinely feels special.

If you're talking about something with geniune performance, do you mean "it's fast", or "it's fun and reasonably quick". Typically bigger heavier cars with big engines are genuinely fast, but often not that much fun (massive generalisation). Hence why a Swift is actually worth considering if you want fun, then maybe a CTR. You want something quick, maybe a 335i.

You really need to help us.

Well "performance cars" are out of the question because of insurance I'm just saying something that's faster than mine with a new design that I like basically I can't put my finger on one the BMW 3 series was very nice however they were made in spain so that puts me off.

Apparently they've had a lot of problems with the 2002-2004 3 series.

Apprenticeship :)

your on an apprenticeship that normally pay less than minimum wage and your dropping 10k on a car after barely driving a year
And u say u want a fast car but your looking at a 140bhp Diesel Scirocco
why the obsession with getting the newest possible car? pay 6k for a Mazda 3 MPS that would hit 60 in 6 seconds or a Focus ST with re map and spend the rest on the extortionate insurance.
Go and test drive some before trying to decide from a handful of cars
