LG 31UM97 31" True 4K 60Hz Professional WideScreen LED Monitor - Black @ £999.95 inc VAT

When most consumers refer to ‘4K’, they’re actually referring to the UHD (Ultra High Definition) resolution of 3840 x 2160. This is, after all, the most common ‘4K’ resolution. It also maintains the common 16:9 aspect ratio and provides quite an enjoyable experience. The LG 31MU97 features a 4096 x 2160 resolution which is also referred to as ‘Digital Cinema 4K’ due to its use as the dominant 4K resolution by the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives). The monitor features LG’s robust ‘business-like’ stand which offers tilt and height adjustment but can’t be pivoted or swivelled.

This display uses a 31” AH-IPS panel (LM310UH1-SLA1) with a 4096 x 2160 resolution (17:9 aspect ratio) and 60Hz refresh rate. This features a very light matte (‘semi-glossy’) screen surface and is designed to provide accurate and consistent colours in both the sRGB and Adobe RGB colour spaces. It uses a flicker-free (‘Flicker Safe’ – PWM free) GB-LED backlight to provide this wide colour gamut (100% sRGB and over 99% Adobe RGB). The monitor is also factory calibrated for both of these colour spaces and features true 10-bit colour reproduction. It can be user-calibrated with the ‘LG True Color Pro’ software as well. ‘Reader’ modes also feature, which are ‘Low Blue Light’ settings allowing the user to select white point targets such as 3882K, 4300K or 4616K to cut down on the blue light emission.

The monitor features a wide range of ports, including; DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, 2 HDMI ports, 3 USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The native resolution is supported at 60Hz over DP or MiniDP but only at 30Hz over HDMI. 5W stereo Maxx Audio speakers also feature, which seems to be a favourite on higher-end LGs at the moment. The included stand can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes.

It appears overclockers have just plagiarised their description directly from my article on this monitor.

I know it's a Friday, LG's own description is non-existent and nobody can be bothered... But I'd appreciate you rewording it or quoting the original source (i.e. me) in some way. Also the model number is 31MU97 not 31UM97.

That aside, stunning monitor and price. A really unique bit of kit :).

PCM2 given the choice between this and a 34 3440x1440 21:9 display, which would take your pick?

Me personally, a 34" UltraWide. I am really fond of the 21:9 aspect ratio and I don't have enough GPU grunt to make a good go of the 4K resolution. I'm personally looking forward to reviewing the curved 34" models, as my first impressions of these at IFA were very positive. I did really like the 4K models like this one in the showroom as well but it just isn't as practical for me. It's something that will get better over time, like a fine wine. ;)

I agree, only difference is I'd go for LG curved model. :)

Sorry about the description we took that as it's what LG linked us too as like you say it's not officially launched by LG yet in EU.

Ah right no problem, that makes sense. :)

Good one on the review PCM2.

A manufacturer should pick up on your knowledge, expertise and your helpfulness in the forums like LTMatt has done for AMD and give you a job. (not that you dont have one already) But only when you get bored of being a pronstar eh?

So lucky on the OCUK website to have such members and great deals on hardware from the shop.

This TRUE 4K monkier surely it means everyone that bought a 4K screen can now safely say its not a real 4K screen ? :)

It this an SST display? It reads like it, and that, along with mini display port makes this extremely tempting. Despite me liking my 21:9 LG so much.

if you play 4k bluerays on this you will have black bars at the top and sides aswell !

for editing i get it, but for gaming it seems 21:9 and faster refresh rates are where its at. 5k 21:9 monitors at the same size will be out next year and for those happy with 1440p there is a new range of 144hz 1440p monitors coming out and hopefully there will at least be 120hz @ 3440 x 1440

Its a cool monitor but the extra resolution mostly is from the increased horizontal aspect ratio right? just like 3400 x 1440

Got to be the worst stand ive seen on a TV lol. I won't get a 4k monitor untill they are 144 hertz.

what’s wrong with 85- 90hz ? watch the huge difference between 30fps and 60fps, add another 30fps on top of that = butter smooth. G-sync is the thing to have on 4k, smooth frames even as low as 40 and at 90 - 100 it still helps a bit there too.

i dont think display port can do 144hz @ 4k and it took 5 years for the last revision to come out, given that DP1.3 is literally only out this month your going to be waiting a long time.
