Thread on behalf of a friend.

They are looking into a new car with work and looking to spend £300-500pm. I know very little about the type of cars they are looking for so appreciate any input.

- Looking for something for up to 5 people (two adults, 3 kids)

These are the only requirements given. They have looked at E class Merc, the jags but asked me for the general opinion of the best car in this class.

They tried the A6 buty did not like, I think due to poor middle seat comfort (rear)

go for the E-Class won't find much else to match it that that price range unless you have find some deals on the new Range Rover

5 series is by far the best value car in that segment. I looked at the E-class and A6 before buying mine. You should quite easily get a decent spec 520d for that budget, but my decent spec 530d (Touring, M-Sport, M-Sport plus, Pro Nav, MFD, Sports Auto, Folding mirrors etc...) came in just above the £500 pm mark.

The A6 is a nice car, but it's already been written off. The E-Class just isn't as nice a place to be as the 5. But can be found considerably cheaper. If they don't really care what they drive, then this might be a good option.

The BEST motor out there for actual people moving though would be something like the Discovery, as it doesn't have the transmission tunnel running through the car, it is much more comfortable for the middle occupant in the back. Also, it has the 3rd row seating, so can fit 5 adults in the back. For their budget though, they wont get a very nice spec sheet, unless they look at examples a couple years old. They aren't overly economical either, and are subject to the £450+ per year tax bills. But that is a little cost when considering paying out for everything else. But despite the drawbacks mentioned, it is still probably one of the best motors out there for shifting people around.

Of course, you could look at 7 seat options from VW / Vauxhall / Seat / Ford etc... if this is what they want to do.

I was offered a business lease on a brand new 530D Touring M Sport Auto with nice spec, 10K per year, 24 months, business only deal of £294 plus VAT. Might be worth seeing what is out there as frankly that was a steal of a deal I felt.
