Low FPS with 290X in Arma 3...

Since Arma 3 is free this weekend I thought I'd give it a try, but the performance has been much lower than I expected for my 290X/4770k. It's weird because the core clock doesn't go over about 800Mhz even though it's overclocked to 1100Mhz. Also none of the CPU cores are hitting 100%, at most they're about 60%, the CPU is overclocked slightly too.

I've also tried setting the unofficial overclocking mode to 'without powerplay support' in Afterburner, which does force the core clock to 1100Mhz but there's no improvement in FPS.

The performance I'm getting on Ultra is about 22-25 on the helicopter ride at the start of the SP campaign, then about 30 once I'm in the camp. If I run the infantry showcase it's between 30-40. This is on 1080p resolution. Looking at reviews like this, I should be getting almost twice that?

The card is watercooled so doesn't go above 50C, so heat isn't an issue. Can anyone tell me what's going on? I've noticed this in other games too (the core clock not maxing out), but it's never been as bad as Arma 3. Thanks.

I hit average 50-60fps in Ultra 1920x1080 and that's in multiplayer too...
But I'm running a 3820 at 4.8GHz and a GTX 780... It's the high clock on the CPU that helps the most with FPS in ARMA (or so I've noticed!)

What's the 4770K Clocked to?

If the GPU is sitting there waiting for the CPU, even a small increase might help.

Do you have a SSD or an HDD? ArmA loves to stream textures, so a fast drive is a must.

Leave ATOC disabled if you have AA enabled unless you want the dreaded blue dots..

Object complexity, object draw distance and AI, are the main culprit. Leave Object detail to standard, object draw distance to about 1-1,5km for infantry play in SP and don't go with the AI overboard.

In MP it depends on the server performance, but you can set it there as well through the server menu to a lower value (use 500m or so).

ArmA is one of the games that has huge potential, but isn't accomplished unless you're part of a clan that has a dedicated guy that play tests and optimize every mission to the bone in order to get a respectable FPS (in order to play it "the way it's mean to be played" - pun intended).

Oh, and forget about 60fps constant, isn't doable, especially on Altis (the big map).
