Hi all,

I just got an S5 and tried a feature I saw called Screen Mirroring (sending videos and photos to media player devices) and have 2 questions about it.

I tried it with my Sony Blu-Ray All in one speakers/amp jobby and my Xbox One.

1) It seems such a good feature I wondered if it's possible to get for example on a Nexus 4?

2) Does anyone know why certain XBMC media players in my house appear to play to, but not others?

It's a Samsung feature, not an Android feature, so you won't get it on a Nexus. The Google equivalent is Chromecast.

Screen mirroring works with Samsung TVs and Samsung allcast share dongles. I didn't even know it worked with other devices.

It could be Miracast? All Android devices based on 4.2 and above supports it. It's usually under "Settings" -> "Display" -> "Cast screen" (will be different for other Android UIs, HTC Sense is "Settings" -> "Media output").

Although I may be getting it wrong judging from some of the devices you tried out...

EDIT: Looks like some Sony BD players supports Miracast. Does the XBox One support it?

It is Miracast/DLNA. All Android phones of a modern age support it. OEM phones like Samsung/Sony/HTC etc have their own additional features based around this but the basic cast feature is supported by base Android phones and works in exactly the same way as any other.

OK thanks for the replies - if it's an Android feature to play to DLNA (which Any idea how I activate it from a Nexus 4 which has plain Android, literally as vanilla as it comes, no custom launchers or anything?

When I am scrolling through my pictures using the plain built in Gallery app, I have a share button but nowhere on that is any context to push to DLNA.

I don't know about Nexus 4, tech terms that's old hat now :p

Install AllCast, that will enable the share intent in the gallery app.

As stated, it's miracast/DLNA.

I used it occasionally with my Note 3 and Sony Bravia but now that I have Chromecast (bought when it was £18 at amazon - best purchase of the year) and a media server using Plex, I just find myself using Chromecast all the time.

Doesn't matter what android phone you have. Just need the chromecast app.

Going via "Settings" -> "Display" -> "Cast screen" should work as well, that will mirror everything on your phone as if it's a second screen.

tried that but strangely my N4 doesn't pick up the DLNA / Miracast devices on my LAN, but the Sammy does.

Strange, Miracast works fine on my Nexus 10, no idea why it's not working for your Nexus 4...

Could try Chromecast, been using this instead and found it's more handy to use compared to Miracast/HDMI connection.

had thought about a chromecast but seems a shame to buy something extra when I have so many DLNA renderers in the house
