Electricity supplier issue - They claim I'm using more than I am..

Smart meters don't generally have problems until someone who doesn't know how to read them gives the wrong readings.

The biggest problem with smart meters as the lack of comms/software sharing between suppliers as if Npower inatalls a smart meter no other supplier can remotely read it and vice versa for all suppliers. So when you switch you lose the smart functionality.

There is a central data collection agent being set up so it can read any smart meter and report it to any supplier as needed but thats late 2015 or early 2016

I had a similar issue with my old meter, as Im a single guy living alone who spends very little time in the house, I was paying over 100 quid per month on electricity. I now spend more time at home and im only using 65.00 and the rates have risen a couple of times since then. The only other changed is npower has fitted a new digital meter.

Get a pay as you go meter, stick £50 in it per month or so and its not much hassle. You can monitor your hourly cost on it. eg - turn off everything except your tumble dryer circuit, let it run and you can see its costing you 50p per hour max.

You could also get a 25x15mm magnet and mount it at the lower left of the meter and watch your hourly cost drop to 0p per hour, this is what my neighbour showed me 3 weeks ago lol.

I have just had an issue with Npower. My monthly bill shot up from £107 to £281!!
They said I had used over 4kwh of electricity in August.
This is because their meter reading (which was taken on the 31st August when there was no-one home) and mine at 1st September were almost 5k apart.
For the previous 2 years we had been using approx 4.5kwh per year, but it looks like their good old estimation process was way out and recalculated when I gave them the readings.
They are investigating why the meter was read when their was no access to the property though.

Is it just as simple as being a case of you underpaying on your monthly £54, and you are now playing catchup through an increase to the direct debit?

Or is the units count actually accruing faster now?

I checked that so I didn't jump to the wrong conclusion. Unit usage has gone up on the meter..

However, I've just checked the app on my phone and my usage for September is showing what I believe it should. March to August are still showing high use, which makes no sense as my habits haven't changed during that period!

What's your neighbours like by any chance ? do they live in darkness with sheets up at the windows, do you ever get a strong odour pass under your nose from time to time ?

You might have someone producing special herbs next door with your electricity

HAHA my neighbours are a young couple who are too dumb to anything like that. They're too busy starting projects in the garden and not finishing them..

Last one was to make a table around a patio heater, box it in so you can't see the base then realise they need to move it 10 meters to the other side of the garden. I have a bunch of pictures for lolz but can't post them as it screams viral sensation :D
