One hell of a barometer!

I can't get my head around the scale of these things. I find 4 cores hard enough to understand :D.

Impressive, wonder if they'll let us borrow it for skynet project :D.

So whilst other nations do exciting things with their supercomputers, we use ours for the weather! No wonder we have a reputation.

Important stuff weather. Governs wind turbines, chemical weapon dispersion and nuclear fallout.

Strongly in favour of anyone buying HPC :)

But but BUT...

Will it run Repton 3?

don't see this as a waste of money tbh...

Aye, if for example they're able to use it to forecast more reliably or at a more local level it can make a huge difference.

People forget how far we've come in weather prediction over the last 50 years, things like farmers being able to leave their crop out for another day, or knowing to bring it in earlier can mean a big difference in their profit, likewise things like being able to predict where there is likely to be heavy rain more efficiently means they can offer better advice to the flood agency.

I joke about the weather forecast being rubbish where I live, but I know that if I travel about 10 minutes out of the dip we live in, the forecast is usually quite accurate (we live in what I believe would be classed as a microclimate due to the hills around most of the town).

I don't suppose there is anything stopping other agencies tapping into the processing power if needed.

We are an island after all that gets significantly affected by weather systems - so it's no surprise this has been invested in.

Still an eye watering amount! It'd be nice if the forums could run on that! :D

I'm glad to see the old "will it run Crysis?" joke still is going strong! :D

Yes but put another way, we've built a computer to predict the future.... that isn't half bad ;)

Beautifully put, you are indeed a wordsmith. :)

Is it? How much value does government get out of it at varying levels when it comes to prepping for inclement weather/allocating resources? How much value does the armed forces get out of it? Etc. Then how much is raised through the sale of data? Etc.

They are reckoning on it saving £2 billion for the reasons you mention. So yeah, in reality we may just break even. ;)
