Hello,

I'm with EE and my contract is up, I'm going to go SIM only as I'm happy with the phone. I'm moving to Virgin as the SIM only deal seems unbeatable, I believe Virgin actually use EE's network.

I've not phoned to cancel yet but had a quick look on the website and it seems EE want 30 days notice and over £20 to unlock the phone!!! Is this right?

£20 seems ridiculous to unlock what is after all my fully paid for phone?

Any advice appreciated (very behind the curve with mobiles...see "happy with note II" :))

Cheers

Sadly if you want EE to do it you have to pay, it's part of their terms and conditions. However there are other much less expensive ways...

Ignore this post I linked to an app which Leezer3 below kindly pointed out can be done for free!

Unfortunately, as soon as someone on XDA finds a free unlock method, 101 apps exploiting this pop up on the market :(

Most of the time they don't mention the risks either, just take your money.
(I'm thinking of the original Galaxy S here; The unlock method had the risk of wiping your IMEI, effectively making the handset useless)

Same deal as root exploits sadly, and that's why some of the newer root/ S-OFF exploit creators have decided to go behind paywalls. (Sunshine S-OFF for the most recent HTC devices...)

No need to unlock an EE phone if you are using a Virgin sim, will work ok :)

Thanks everyone, The deal from Virgin:

30-day contract
1200 minutes
unlimited texts
1GB data

I'm an existing customer...1GB is more than enough for me as I'm almost always on WiFi. Selling point is the 30 day contract, easy to get out of when I decide to upgrade the phone.

Cheers All,
