Why would you pick a 5 year old M Sport for 11k if you just want a run about for your wife?

I haven't its her money she spends it how she wants. she saw this and set her heart on it. I have advised her its not a good idea hence me posting here.

Her idea or what I can gather is
1. colour (blue metallic) but I am sure this is negotiable
2. leather interior and lots of toys- heated seats especially for those cold winter nights - and it has had a lady owner before.- this is the killer she likes her toys not that it has had a lady owner before but just toys.
3. 4 doors and roomy - she visits her mates and nearly always has a car full when she is out and about.
4. rear parking sensor - pants at parking
5. Sat Nav as she cant find her way out of a paper bag
etc etc

I am sure there are other alternatives maybe bearing in mind the above are pretty essential for her could someone suggest an alternative that I can suggest to her to take a look at.

It's what she wants. All your points and counter arguments are therefore invalid.

is msport just a trim level or something? 140hp is hardly a rocket.

Think it's a good enough buy though tbh, she wants it and it's not not badly priced I don't think. If she doesn't like it you can always sell it.

I can't work out why BMW didn't make xenons or at least projector headlights standard. Even a 10 year old smart forfour gets projector headlights from the factory.

Seems fine to me. If she likes it and you can afford it there's no reason not to buy it. It's not like it's some incredibly complex, unreliable car - it's just a modern 3 series. Personally I'd be happy she was going for that and not some awful Corsa type thing.

Fit poor headlights = encourage those that care to spec the option upgrade.
People that don't care about headlights arent bothered it their car has Xenons or candles for lights :p

If your misses likes it buy it. In her mind its "oooo BMW" I will look so cool. If you recommend a car and anything goes wrong you will be in the firing line. The argument you can get far more for less will most likely be invalid.

Not even the Motors forum can help you here...

That works for not having Xenons as standard but the no projector lense thing is just bizarre, almost nobody would pay just to get projectors but not having them reduces the showroom appeal of the model in general and makes the front look crap for no real reason.

They are so inconsistent with it as well.

E39? Projectors throughout production.
E60? Reflectors for post facelift, projects for facelift.
F10? Reflectors throughout production.

Just annoying really - but everyone does it. Look at the front of any low end Audi, Mercedes or BMW and you can guarantee it'll have massive wheels, loads of Sport badges and... totally rubbish lenses you'd expect to find on a 1995 Ford Fiesta. Odd.

Simple - reflectors are cheaper to manufacture so why fit a higher cost product for a market that doesn't care.

Probably one of the reasons why BMW and VAG make billions profit and Ford are struggling to maintain market share.

We've been through this before.

Projectors can't be that much more expensive if at all if they're happy to fit them to a 1999 Fiat Punto 1.2. Or a 1998 Vauxhall Vectra.

Expense isn't the reason, but I have no idea what is. They fitted projectors randomly to the facelift E46 coupe but not to the pre facelift for example. WHY?!

I don't see why anyone would purchase the 18i, am I missing something? The 20i is the same engine albeit with a different map and inlet manifold; a quick google shows it has the same fuel economy but +40bhp (WOW++) and +20nm torque. Hardly a massive increase in power but it makes me question the 18i

MPG: combined/extra urban/urban
318i: 44.8/53.3/34.9
320i: 44.1/53.3/34

Based on this, what possible purpose does the 18i serve?

EDIT: Same co2 emissions and therefore VED bracket too.
