290x Lightning or gigabyte 970 G1

I would wait for drivers, 290x and 780ti are running mature drivers and if you do a quick Google search you can see some articles comparing them on launch drivers to today's drivers.

The 780ti and 290x have gained 10-15% over the course of there life time.

Add that improvement to the GTX970, a card that's still running on launch drivers.

I would't wait for too much. The architecture is not new, 750ti is out for a while. The will be some iprovements but no miracle in my opinion.

Depends on your priorities - for me the 970 was the obvious choice because it generates less heat for my case so keeps my CPU happy.

I personally don't see the point in splitting hairs between cards like the 970 & lightening & focus more on the big leaps in performance when I choose my next gen card

the MSI Lightning is now 299 quid

ok Gibbo give me a price for two please  quote me pretty

plus, how long will 4GB RAM last me at 1080p ...i.e 1 or 2 years ?

I think it's a no brainer, Although I'm using a 290x now I'd go for the 970, Like my MSI 290x gaming the card still chucks the heat into the case so two of those is gonna be a nightmare,

I bought mine with the intention of going crossfire in my Corsair Vengeance case but even though I have 6 aftermarket fans from Noctua and Corsair moving the air the temps are still bad and too high too even consider crossfire. If your watercooling fair enough but air cooling with the heat from 290x's dumped in the case is not good.

ok thanks, i realise these things but i need somebody to remind me, i'll buy another 970 right now, after all, it is a brilliant card
