Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 in short supply

Hard to find one, selling too well

The Geforce GTX 970 is probably the most attractive cards in performance market. It doesn’t cost arm or leg and for around $350 you can get really great card. The card is based on Maxwell architecture and doesn’t need a lot of power but offers great gaming experience.

Some of the cards suffer from Coil Whine but at the same time, it is hard to hear this unpleasant noise in a closed case. It turns out that some components probably R22 inductors are to blame and not all the cards are affected. A lot of people wanted to RMA their cards as they didn’t like the noise.

The Geforce GTX 980 cards are not affected by the issue as all the GTX 980cards are manufactured under Nvidia supervision. One can imagine that Taiwanese partners decided to use cheaper components to make slightly larger profits as higher end components don’t get affected by the issue.

Geforce GTX 970 are hard to find, Newegg had one card in stock while yesterday it had three. They sell out rather fast and we had difficulties to find them in stock anywhere else.

Its competition, the Hawaii based Radeon R290, looks quite attractive and a bit easier to find. They are selling for $260 after the mail-in rebate and are not that far off performance wise. They do need a bit more power but since it's hard to find GTX 970 in stock this shortage might get some more customers AMD way.

The Geforce GTX 960m which is a mainstream version of the Maxwell 2.0, is expected early next year as it seems like Nvidia cannot make enough higher end Maxwell cards and yet it still has quite a few Kepler cards including Geforce GTX 760. These are still quite popular cards among the upgrade market.

Nice to see that gamers are lapping up this great, fast card :) Good price and pretty fast are the main reasons for these flying off the shelves before stock can get put back on.

I feel sorry for everyone who got into the hype and upgraded from 780 or 290s.

Only to realise it was pointless.

Upgrading to newer GPUs need to show us much more of a performance boost I feel.
Amd got this spot on with 7000 series to 290 series.

You could say that about people who went for a 290x over a 290 on release, or upgrading to a 290x from a 290.

Good that you feel sorry for AMD Matt then, as that is what he did :D

Id hazard a guess that very few people upgraded from 780/290. As impressive as the 900 series are, for someone on say an nv 5/600 series they're a nice boost. But as a 780 owner they're only a warm up act for proper Maxwell cards.

Don't feel bad for us, it was a good upgrade :)

For me it was about upgrade viability, I had a GTX780 and wanted more power, this meant SLI, another GTX780 would have cost roughly the same as selling mine and buying two GTX970's so that's what I did, compared to SLI 780's it was a much better buy as these run faster, cooler, quieter and use less juice while doing so, win win :)

Anybody with a single 290 looking for more power would have been in a similar boat (well except their card would be worth less).

And then from 290x 4GB to 290x 8GB. He's insane but he already knows that.

As for 970s, it's surprising that nvidia pushed efficiency so much considering the Kepler was already more efficient than Hawaii. However they have no obligation to provide more powerful cards.

If you have a 780/290 and up then these cards aren't for you if you want more performance.
But I can imagine 6000/500 series people being very impressed if they upgraded now.

Exceptions though! and this is mainly aimed towards you guys who Benchmark a lot. It would be best to buy the 290x over the 290 or the 980 over the 970... That little extra performance will be worth it for you.

But what I say above is talking about gaming and gaming performance only.

no AMD Matt just throws his money away

His money, his choice and I don't knock anyone for what they buy with their own money. If people went from a 290X/290/780/780Ti/Titan to a 970/980, that was their choice and I certainly don't feel sorry for them, I respect what they choose to do with their own money :)

Of course there will be exceptions from you when AMDMatt gets tarred with the same brush :D

I moved from water cooled 290 and do not regret the change to 970 SLI AT ALL....

i moved from 290 crossfire to 980 (ok not quite 970) sli and all the problems my pc was giving me disappeared in the blink of a eye. I was very disappointed because i got the 290's on release date but they just gave me headaches (they are now working perfectly individually in other pc's though so not all bad)

Have you changed and tried?
I debated switching and decided for me it wasnt worth it what i have is fine atm for Me, but if others do and enjoy it surely thats also their choice and their happy with it not pointless?
Seems to be a few on the forum that have that all seem to be happy with what they have done and surely user's themselves being happy with the changes means it was a good one?
Moogleys is about the only one i have seen that didnt see much difference and changed back
We all have different wants and needs and expectations from what we buy and buy different things its why some buy a 290 vs a 290x or a 970 vs a 980 or even buy a 280 simply because we dont want/afford the best , doesnt make our choice pointless
