hi guys I have a 290 tri x non x version.
and my cousin wants to buy it do u think jumping to a galax gtx 980 soc
is a good upgrade for me and is it a good card
from what I can see for the price its highly overclocked what do you guys reckon?

Is the 980 a good card? Yes, it is probably the best card around.

Is it a good upgrade? Probably not - it isn't a huge amount quicker that your 290 and costs more than double.

Might want to look at a 970/780ti for <£300, or getting another 290 or telling your cousin to get a new 290.

hmm see that's what I mean im not sure no my 290 cant be flashed because its the tri x version they don't unlock unfortunately I have checked.
im looking really more at the hdmi 2.0 option is a big thing for me as im looking to also get a 4k tv at some point.
basically my cousin is offering me 200 for my tri x and I know someone that has a gtx 980 galax soc version and wants only 300 for it
having read a few reviews of it compared to my card it does seem quite a bit faster what do u reckon?

Think about that when you get your TV-it might have DP anyway.

I went 980 and 970 and now back with a Tri-X 290 after selling my last one. :)

Tbh for me I cannot tell any difference between a 970 & 290 when gaming so don't mind which I have.

Basically at a cost of ~£100+, you better get some of these:

also I don't think my motherboard is good enough for sli?
and also im not sure about my power supply either so its more cost
im really not sure

What motherboard and psu have you got?

The real question is Are you having any problems with your 290, does it run games perfectly well.

If your answer is yes then no point tbh.

Although the 980 is a better card you wont notice anything different unless you are struggling in certain games that nvidia are better at. Benchmarks obviously will be better if your into that kind of thing :)

PSU is plenty for sli 970, ran 780 sli on a 6 year old corsair hx 850. But I think that board is xfire only.

O ok but apparently my motherboard does not support full sli speed or something. Like it has 1 full 16 speed pcie slot and 1 8 speed slot i think thats what it is

That would be fine for SLI. It would probably run them both at X8 X8 but that wouldn't be noticeably different from X16 X16 in truth. 1 maybe 2 fps at max.

Outside of x chipset boards, the only z series boards that do dual x16 sli are the uber expensive PLX enabled boards. Not that there's an awful difference between x8 and x16.
