i7 950 1366 on rampage iii... to xeon 5650?

Got a 622 score @ 2.93. Oc'd to 3.52 :
blck 150 ish 24x core vltg 1.35 dram 1.65 re ran and got a worse score of 491 and was very hot in doing so - 80c.. Which is about the limit..

Must be something VERY wrong with my oc ?!

What are the other settings? I found qpi voltage to be the most critical for stability once I had found a vcore I was happy with.

With a 5670 I'm using 200 blck, 21 multi at 1.31875 for vcore and 1.31250 for qpi

Did you just go straight in at 1.35v? I didn't want to go too high as I want to keep temperatures under control, although as it was using the same cooler on a 130w 960 it's been ok. 72 is the highest I've managed with ibt.

Try dropping the multiplier to one that's possible, x5650 is 20x with turbo of 22 or 23.

Yeah, i went for the x5670, found very little on it for the overclocking so went with roughly what i knew, naive !
Dropped the multi as per yours to 21 and went for 160 blc for 3360, ran cinebench and got 770 but the temp according to Speedfan gets to about 85 - too hot ... It seems like my CPU fan isnt reacting to the heat as quickly as when i had the i7 fitted.. Havent changed the fan settings as theyre on auto..

Will continue to play - thanks for your advice.

For anyone thats interested, i've just ordered a corsair h80 from OC. Lets hope that brings the temps down a bit!

Great cooler and a wise choice.

Was it a refurb? I run two h100s :D Got them for £40 each.

The nice part is that the H80 was designed long after the hex core 1366 had bolted, so not many people use them. Back when the hex core came out the best AIO was the H50 and compared to the H80.. Well there's double the coolant volume for a start.

You should have absolutely no issues reaching 4ghz and beyond with that cooler :)

No, brand new from the site. I was loking at the h100's but wasnt certain they'd fit in my case. Im going to have to take the motherboard out as it looks like Lian li had put the rearward cpu access a bit far over (http://postimg.org/image/tuiaom7pv/) - bit of a pain but thankfully my machines not exactly full up of gubbins and its a fairly large case.

I look forward to getting to 4.0 and beyond, it'll have been my highest overclock, nothing compared to what some of you guys do but a PB all the same !

Fitted a 80i, forgot to plug in the 8 pin 12v socket and spent 30 mins trying to work out why it wouldnt boot, oops !

Went for a similar clock to yours, slightly lower at blck 190 with vcore of 1.31 and cpu 1.31.calc

Booting into win sometimes fails, get a few apps loaded and crashes. Hmm Need to read up more on fine tuning / clocking. Any specific pointers?

How much RAM? I'm only using 3 4GB 1.5v sticks so it's made life easier with the other settings.

I'd start stock, make sure IBT etc run fine for a while, then try something easy like 3.6 at 1.27 then work down, or voltages up until it's stable.

keep RAM speed low while testing.

You could try dropping to 3 slots while testing, I had 6 2GB sticks of 1600 corsair when I first got the x58, but I never got it stable at 1600, 1333 was ok though, it would always just hang at 1600.

I found it easier to start low, then move up when I was stable for an hour of testing, it does take a few painful days, but I've only had to up qpi a notch or two and cpu once to be stable all the time.

I went for 3.8 then 4.0, which I got to quite easily, 4.2 was quite an increase in voltages, but acceptable, 4.4 would be too much for my old single fan cooler :p

You get the feeling for what voltage causes what crash eventually! I did disconnect all my spinning HDDs and only tested with SSD, with a full disk image backup before starting. That way I image back at the end of testing, knowing there is no disk/ntfs corruption from the hangs.

Ive dropped the ram - running 8GB of the corsair 1600 mhz stuff.

CPUr=21.0, BCLK=190, PICeFreq=100, DramFreq=1143, UCLKFreq=2286, CPUvolt=1.34, QPI volt=1.34, CPUpllVolt=1.812, DramBusVolt=1.654, IOHVolt=1.11, IOHPCI=1.5, ICHVolt=1.11.

Cpu Max Temp = 70
ICH Max Temp = 57
IOH Max temp = 60.

IBT ran in 244.84 seconds.

how is performance vs your old 950? or have you had time to test yet.
Im tempted to try one to see if it gives a boost to minimums in bf4.

Stuck in the remaining 4gb of corsair dominator. Ran same ibt. Fails consistently on 7th run. Tried upping cpu to 1.35 and qpi the same but nada. Hmm I suppose there's always tomorrow .

Turn the QPI DRAM back down and try lower the uncore ratio to say 1.8x RAM speed instead of 2x

I know 2x was recommended for i7 920s etc but I think 1.5 is okay for the Xeons and 2x might be pushing it a bit hard?

Will give it a try.

The H80i is bloody noisy, and the software having NO effect over the speed of the fans ! Hmm
