Teacher stabbed to death at Leeds high school

not the point he was suggesting that you can't experience good feelings in computer games which you can. Whilst yes not everyone gets to play for money that rush you get when you beat your opponent through skill is the same on a computer as it is with a football on a pitch.

Yes it is exactly the same physiological action however you don't get the physical exertion that would use the resulting consequential physiological changes - if performed over long periods or with frequent repetition this would be harmful.

hmmm never experienced same feeling of satisfaction or release of endorphins on a game than I have after a grueling gym session, each to their own though I guess

I have but then i go to the gym and play games. As do many of the people I play with Shock horror.

yes indeed I'm not saying staying in all the time to be the best at a game is a healthy life but to suggest their is no enjoyment from the experience is wrong. People need to experience the hole rainbow of emotions in life and they need to do it through living life via every aspect but that doesn't mean they should avoid computer games.

Just annoys me when people suggest it's all something's fault when it's not it's clearly combination of things and until we stop blaming the current villain we may never understand why some people go that way.

Oh I agree I always remember being told everything in moderation - seems people just don't get this. People do tend to think in dualities though either games are good or bad and no inbetween.

Sounds almost like a textbook sociopath, making it as expected the result of undiagnosed mental illness.

The sooner we view some aspects of criminality as a public health issues as opposed to our traditional views on crime & punishment the better. Sadly the population is still woefully uneducated & ignorant on this issue so the kind of changes required will never be popular enough for the electorate.

From the sounds of it the child in question may require a stay in a secure unit forever for the protection of the population, but I'd bet good money there is a history of sexual or physical abuse underpinning this case.

Damn media swarming over the school last night and this morning - my daughter had to leave via a side entrance to avoid the scrum.

Even this morning, I went past at 6am and there were 4 news crews there doing interviews with anything that moved :/

Wish they'd just let it go now and leave the school, and it's staff/pupils, in peace.

That's just not true.

'Sporting' activities release adrenaline and endorphins, natures own 'feel good' drugs.

Not just that, they provide a 'real' sense of achievement, physical gains are visible.

Playing sport WILL make you more attractive.

Feeling low or depressed? Put the games down and go for a run. ;)

video games will also release endorphins and have been proven to increase visual reasoning and hand eye coordination and reflexes.

I can't say gaming makes me feel anywhere near as good as going out for a run or going flying for the day.

He shouldn't have been sent to prison he's a child, I think a secure unit would have been best, he's clearly mentally unwell

I don't care where you put him as long as he's locked away from the general public for the rest of his natural life

Does experiencing sexual or physical abuse predicate psychopathy? I've no idea, but the details of the case I've heard suggested he was from a decent, supportive family (however much a court can really ascertain that).

General emotional abuse & neglect along with certain genetic markers/prerequisites allowing for the propensity in most cases.

"A study by Farrington of a sample of London males followed between age 8 and 48 included studying which factors scored 10 or more on the PCL:SV at age 48.

The strongest factors included having a convicted parent, being physically neglected, low involvement of the father with the boy, low family income, and coming from a disrupted family. Other significant factors included poor supervision, harsh discipline, large family size, delinquent sibling, young mother, depressed mother, low social class, and poor housing. There has also been association between psychopaths and detrimental treatment by peers.

Researchers have linked head injuries with psychopathy and violence. Since the 1980s, scientists have associated traumatic brain injury, such as damage to the prefrontal cortex, including the orbitofrontal cortex, with psychopathic behavior and an inability to make morally and socially acceptable decisions. Children with early damage in the prefrontal cortex may never fully develop social or moral reasoning and become "psychopathic individuals ... characterized by high levels of aggression and antisocial behavior performed without guilt or empathy for their victims."

Additionally, damage to the amygdala may impair the ability of the prefrontal cortex to interpret feedback from the limbic system, which could result in uninhibited signals that manifest in violent and aggressive behavior."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopathy - quite a good page on the matter.

He'd be 36 and have at least half his life to go. Very reassuring.

The judgement was fair - life in prison, no chance of release before 20 yrs where he will no doubt be reassessed by everyone and their dog and if there is even a hint of him still being a psycho he will stay locked up - basically the chances of him ever being released are massively slim.
