3D gaming on a TV?

I recently upgraded to a GTX970 and have been messing about with the 3D and some old fashioned red/blue glasses and although it's a little dark, some games are still quite impressive.
I am in the market for a new TV and might as well get one with 3D to play some single player games like Batman, Tomb Raider, Trine etc.
I was wondering if any of you had experience of playing games on a large 3D tv? and if so, what type of 3D would be best, active or passive?

Thanks :)

It's rubbish to be honest, because HDMI 1.4b only does 24hz at 1080p or 60hz at 720p

So you either take a massive hit in image quality or play in jerky vision.

HDMI 2.0 might solve the issue but I'm not really sure.

60hz at 720p don't seem that bad for single player stuff. I will obviously play mostly on my PC monitor, but for occasional games I like the idea to be honest.

I do all my gaming on a 55" Plasma anyway.

But I tried Deus Ex: HR and Hitman: Absolution and found them to be more enjoyable in 1080p 2D than 720p 3D.

I think 55" may be a bit too big for 720p, so maybe that's why you think it look's a bit bad. I am thinking more along the lines of a 42" led or something.

It's fantastic, but a bit of a pain to setup on a PC I found. I'd buy a cheap PS3 and get Gran Turismo 6, Motorstorm etc.. they'll blow you away. Anyone saying it's crap have either got a crap TV or are jealous.

I recommended passive 3D, ass battery powered glasses flicker and hurt your eyes after a while. I've got a LG and the glasses are like sun glasses, and the 3D is brilliant.

I was looking at the NVIDIA 3DTV Play software, it look's quite straight forward. In what way was it a pain to set up?

I ended up getting a 42" LG 3D TV and I have to say that it's been some of the most immersive gaming that I have ever experienced. I have just finished a 4 hour session of metro last light in 3d and I was bricking it at a number of points :)

I am sitting about 2.5m from my TV and to be honest games still look very good at 720p in 3D.
It has given me a reason to go back through my steam collection and play though games that I never got around to before, like Dishonored and Sleeping Dogs.

Good times :)

It's largely pointless as in multiplayer gaming you are gimped by the depth perception that no one else has to deal with, and in single player apart from metro most other games have issues at some point.

All in all, if you already have the gear go ahead but do not buy just for 3d

My personal experience with a 3D TV:
I only bought it for the 3D feature, watched a few 3D movies and gamed with it a couple of times but after not even a week, the novelty wore off. Got it Christmas 2012 and I haven't used it since.
It was a £1200 37" Panasonic so it was a decent quality TV. The 3D feels more like a gimmic to me. I personally wouldn't recommend getting a TV just based on it being 3D, unless you're rich.
Once those Oculus Rift sets become available for retail, 3D will be kinda pointless I would imagine.

I use my 55" LG 3D TV for 3D gaming and I use either LGs own 2d-3d or TriDef program.
If you use Tridef you get 1080p@60hz

I agree about 3D being no good for multiplayer, but I disagree about "most other games have issues" part. Some of the games I have tried that I would rate as an improved experience with 3D on are: Dishonored, Just Cause 2, Batman AA & AC, Sleeping Dogs, Grid Auto-sport, Trine 1&2, Bioshock Infinite, Mirrors Edge, Sonic Generations, Portal 2, Skyrim. I am sure there are lot's more that I am yet to discover.
Also there are games where the 3D is broken or just looks wrong, but there is a website where people create fixes for games where the 3D is a bit wrong. http://helixmod.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html

For now, I am still having bags of fun with it. It's not something that you would want to use all the time, but for a blast now and then it's untouchable (until Oculus Rift is released proper!).
