Driving Newcastle to Manchester next week

I have a sat nav that I rarely use so will take that along with me, although the maps haven't been updated in 4 years. :(

There are roadworks everywhere at the moment. I drove from Portsmouth to Durham then back to Portsmouth again all on Monday. As already mentioned the fairly long stretch of roadworks on the A1 by Leaming Bar is irritating but after having sat in traffic on the A3, M25, ridiculous queues because of roadworks at the M1/M6 junction and then another long stretch of roadworks on the M1 Nottingham way, that A1 stretch seemed like nothing.

Today had me driving Portsmouth to Birmingham and unsurprisingly this saw yet more roadworks on the M5 in two spots. I understand the need for maintenance, obviously, but it really does seem like every single motorway is screwed all at the same time. Words cannot explain my rage each and every time ;)

Yes driving may be easy, but I haven't driven long distance cross country before. Furthest I've driven is Newcastle to Dunbar straight up the A1 and that was 5 years ago.

I live about 10 miles from Dunbar and I've driven from here to Manchester, the wost part by far is Dunbar to Newcastle, so if you found that ok, then Manchester will be no problem.

Driving is driving. If anything its easier on the motorway. Just keep concentrating.
The distance shouldn't matter. Just remember to take a break if you are feeling tired or something. The distance you are driving is nothing to be honest. I've done london to leeds. Then leeds to london in the same evening.

The main motorway routes haven't changed in 4 years so you're in luck?

I was thinking when I get to Manchester, last time I used the sat nav was to navigate around Sunderland city centre. It tried to send me down the wrong way down one way streets at every opportunity. :o

Right, definity driving to Manchester next week instead of Train/Coach. Haven't made my mind up whether to go the motorway way or the A-roads as Tuppy_Glossop suggested, will probably decide on the day. Setting off early after rush hour traffic.

Just hope my 13 year old Megane holds up. :D

This sounds like a really scary drive, I definitely wouldn't attempt it.

I'd imagine it would be to someone who has never attempted it. Some of us are much more confident in our driving skills than others, i myself have always been confident, as soon as i passed my test, i drove 400 odd miles from Teesside to Newquay, and now i choose to drive to my holiday destinations in Europe rather than fly after driving to Barca last month. I loved it. I would hazard a guess that once Lee has completed his drive to MCR, he'll be looking forward to his next 'long distance drive' (Not that Newcastle to Manc is a long drive).

I think he was being sarcastic...

I've never been worried about any journey, obviously I started small after passing my test but I was soon going much further.

I've done a few 8-10 hour drives, some involving ferry crossings and it's still easy, what's the worry?

I managed a 650 mile drive in a Corsa a few months after passing my test, I'm sure you will be fine.

Motorways and dual carriageways are the easiest roads to drive on anyway, so long as it isn't rush hour.

I did it. :D

It was easy with help from the sat nav. We stopped off at Tadcaster on the way back for lunch and a pint of Samuel Smiths at the Old Brewery. :)
