970 Asus Strix or MSI Gamer?

Just a couple of questions, on my 970 MSI im running my main monitor on DP and second on DVI.

As soon as I turn my PC on, the DVI monitor is showing bios etc... the monitor on DP is just sat there waiting for a signal. Once in windows it works.

I just cleaned out my old nvidia drivers and then booted back into windows to install the new ones. The monitor on the DP would not work. So I take it, it needs drivers for the DP to work? This seems rubbish if you had one monitor on DP only.

I have run the Gainward Phantom , and EVGA FTW . FTW obviously faster out the box , but if you are looking for cool and quiet , the Phantom is amazing , only downside is it only has 2 year warranty , whereas the EVGA is 5 years with a free backplate . I am of the opinion that there is very little difference in all the cards , just the factory OC , and aesthetics .

I'll hopefully tell you tomorrow haha. I think all cards have cases of failings in one way or another. You should also look at the Asus Strixx as until the very last minute, I was going for that. Then changed my mind as I love the look of the MSI (silly reason i know :D)

So how's the MSI working out for you?

Had a wee play with the card last night. Only ran heaven 4 bench and it scored about 100 points less than my 7950 xfire while staying cool and quiet. Quite impressed tbh. Fired up a few games and maxing everything with ease and had a play about with DSR. So far so good, only noticed a tiny bit of coil whine when fps is really high.

what did you score on the heaven bench btw? can you link a screenie? I'm quite interested as I'm toying with selling my two 7950's, but nothing out there will give me a 25% increase on a single card yet so keep holding fire on it. I'm not buying the 980 at the price it is, and the 970 like I touched on above worries me that the performance is around about the same if not little worse than what I currently can achieve. I currently hit 1863 score in Heaven 4 bench with my current setup, the fastest single 970 is over 200 points less than that. I don't want a side grade but still toying with a few ideas.

Scored a little over 1500. Can link a screenie tonight. My 7950 xfire score was 1650 but was probably limited with my i5 and 16x/4x setup. The problem I had was that the newer games I was playing there was no xfire profiles and there still isn't. Trying to max games in a single 7950 wasn't fun at all. Single 970 is maxing everything with ease at 1080p....so far.

that's good, sounds like your enjoying it which is the main thing and thanks for the numbers. And oh yeah, there's no doubt the 970 is a much better card than the 7950 on it's own so if you have had enough of crossfire than that's probably a good move. For me personally, I've only found a few games so far that doesn't work at all, some take some messing around with profiles, but I'm more than happy at the moment hence why I'm sticking with what I have for the next 6 months, just waiting on the next round of cards.

Do you plan on a 2nd 970 in the future would you think? and about time you edited your sig ;)

Haha, yeah I forgot about the sig. Will change it when I get a minute. I plan (if post Christmas funds allow) on a CPU, motherboard & Ram upgrade before I think about SLI. Could also be doing with a 1440p monitor that would tax a couple of them lol. Definitely happy with the 970 at present. Trades blows, when overclocked, with a 780ti which were around £500 a few months ago.

Any sign of the 100% fan speed issue? I've been getting perilously close to ordering the MSI 970 as being a good compromise between the budget and top of the range cards. However, since the initial glowing reviews it does seem to be getting a fair amount of negative feedback from users. And now OcUK offer up the Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X 4096MB for £287.99 (including 4 games) just to mess with our heads!

Nope, not yet anyway. Hopefully it doesn't happen but worst comes to it, will be getting RMA'd. Also, no coil whine unless it's kicking out silly fps on a game menu without v sync.

Good scores I see :)

I'm going to save up for a 980 and sell my GPUS later

Yeah, I was tempted to spend the extra and the 980 but I'm pretty sure the mrs would have killed me. :D

Winter is coming, you might regret losing the 7950's. :)

Never thought about that. The bedroom was nice and cosy after a gaming sesh :D
