NVIDIA’s Tom Peterson explains 4K resolution and how GeForce GTX is the best choice to power 4K gami

No Arc, I am so busy doing other things + work + family are not giving me the time to give my full attention to the forums (and it is needed here). I would like to pick it up again when things quiet down a bit but not enough hours in a day scenario at the mo :(

All the mods are great guys and have a tough time and they certainly get a tip of my hat at the job they do :)

That's fair enough. :)

8GB GTX 980's if we ever see them, probably will be the best choice for 4K gaming, have more grunt than other GPU's out atm and no worries about vram.

In ~6 months we will see new cards, HBM = 20nm hopefully from AMD and whatever Nvidia put out next. It will make arguing over the 980 4GB and 290X 8GB seem pointless. Think everyone looking seriously at 4K should hold fire until either '8GB 980' or new cards from AMD, yes 290X has 8GB but it doesn't have enough horsepower and runs hotter than the sun. Just wait, something better isn't far away now..

Multi 290Xs @4K are faster than GTX 980s

Multi GTX 980s on air @4K run hotter than 290Xs on air lol.

No comparison. Booms chatting about 8GB 290X's which you don't have to compare ;)

Still the same card just with extra VRAM.

4gb of extra VRAM is not going to make a pile of 290Xs run as hot as the 980s @4K

The extra memory won't make any difference to the overclocks you can do on the core either.

The cooler on the 980 is total crap, at least the one on the reference 290X works even if you need earplugs lol.

@ Kaap

Whoa hold on a sec, didn't you just buy 4 x 980's?

I'm really confused lol. It reads like you don't rate them very well but just bought 4 lol.

Anyway my point was, we're approaching real next gen cards, die shrunk, new memory standard for AMD. Whatever Nvidia put out next, I just think it would be better to do a 4K build with those cards, over all of the current ones.

If you have to do a 4K build soon, if 8GB 980's ever get released they would be my choice. The 980 is faster than other cards, and more efficient doing so.

If you can wait a bit 20nm + HBM is where it's at imho.

What was the temp difference? I'd trade a couple of degrees hotter rather than have to wear earplugs to game with ;)

With the fans @Max

The 980s overclocked can go over 91c on Heaven 4 and konk out, I don't know how much higher they will go but the temps just keep increasing and there is nothing you can do about it.

The 290Xs overclocked and overvolted stay under 90c and get round the bench.

^ Definitely so. The 980 doesn't have a crap cooler though, that's some what, a little far fetched.

They are bad, it may look like the Titan cooler but it does not perform like it.

4 Titans on air going round the Heaven 4 bench will stay around 80c which is not bad as they have a higher TDP than the 980s by good margin.

All 4 of them? Who's to say your cards are not running hotter than lets say, Joe Blogs who as the equivalent setup arrangement as you?

My 980s are place holders until the Maxwell Titan shows up.:D

The thing to remember about the 980s is they are fantastic cards and perform incredibly well in their target market, I am having a lot of fun with them but they can not do everything better than other options. Even Gibbo will tell you there are better options for 4K like the 290Xs.

Going to 8gb on the 980s would be a mistake as then the reviewers can compare them to the 8gb 290Xs which perform better @4K in multi GPU setups. The 980s are not 4K cards for example @1080p they totally thrash my Titans on Heaven 4 but raise the resolution to 4K and the Titans win.

Yes the Titan's win probably due to extra vram, in the same way that the 8GB 290X sees an uplift in certain games at 4K, so will the 980 8GB, which also has more grunt than any other current card today. 8GB 980 would therefore be the best current 4K card, lower power more performance no VRAM issue to worry about. We may never see an 8GB version though lol.

It is a well known fact that the 980s are hot running, why do you think they have that removable cover on the back plate, they are what they are.

For a multi GPU setup water is the way to go with these cards for long term use.

You don't need the extra VRAM to run Heaven 4 @4K, you need a wide fast bus.

Extra VRAM at 4K does nothing to help a card if it is not needed, in fact it can hinder performance sometimes. This is one of the reasons why the 780ti is more rapid than the Titan BE unless you start stacking them and increasing the settings.

Using custom water, average temp is 47c here with 1550mhz core @ 1.275v. Amazing cards these, performance blows away my old 290X TRi-X and Titan Black.

Heatsinks helps with keeping low temps,

Kaap benches his Titans at stock against his 290X's overvolted & clocked so we've no idea how they really compare :D
